Steve observes how Jonathan is always the one going around taking pictures of everyone capturing organic candid moments. Him noticing that all the photos he ever goes through with Nancy and the kids are of everyone but Jonathan, since he's always the one behind the camera. Sure, there are some here and there, but they're stiff group portraits taken with a timer, or taken by someone else, and they don't capture Jonathan in true candid moments of happiness, genuine without the stiff awkward posture of someone who knows they're being photographed.

So Steve buys a camera, money never being an issue for him, and learns to use it. Learns how to frame a photo right, learns about lighting and shadows, learns how to take photos for the sole purpose of making sure he captures Jonathan the way Jonathan captures everyone else.

The first time Steve takes his photo the flash and shutter of the camera catches Jonathan off guard, stunned and bewildered as he processes that someone is actually taking a picture of him. And he turns, eyes still blinded from the flash, and sees Steve with a camera in his hands, bulky and large enough to cover his nose and eyes, but not large enough to cover the idiotic smile stretched across his face. Steve takes the next photo while Jonathan is still stunned, capturing his wide eyes and the tinge of pink on his cheeks.
