Summary:

Robin seems to realize that they're talking at each other through her closed window and quickly opens it up to let Steve crawl through. "What's going on?" she demands.

"I kissed Jonathan Byers," Steve says. Honestly he hadn't meant to blurt it at her, but some version of that phrase has been rolling around in his head ever since he did it, so he feels justified in not having it together.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's the last night for the Byers in Hawkins and Steve and Jonathan are boxing up some of Jonathan's things. Nancy had been with them earlier, but Karen Wheeler always tries a little harder at parenting after there's a local tragedy. So Nancy had to leave to make her relatively strict curfew. Steve's on his own again, with no parents to enforce a curfew or care when he gets home, so he stays and continues to help and spend time together while they can.

A year ago it would have been awkward, but things were smooth earlier with Nancy there between them and they're smooth now. Everyone debriefed about their part in the latest Upside Down events a few days earlier, but now Jonathan and Steve go into real details, talking about trying to photograph an insane rat, bosses exploding into sentient evil goo, breaking a secret Russian code, and getting literally tortured. There's teasing about Steve and fights and Jonathan previously kicking his ass. There's some discussion of Steve going into that final battle concussed and under the influence, which turns into making fun of Dustin and Suzie.

They're slowly doing less and less packing and more and more quiet flirting that neither of them acknowledge. Eventually, they're sitting on the floor, leaning against the wall shoulder to shoulder, just talking.

Steve mentions something about how at least Will was relatively safer this time around and the conversation turns to protecting the kids and how they admire each other for how they each do that. They're earnest about protecting the kids and how they each think the other is doing a better job of it. They end up making each other promise to take care of the kids they'll have left (Jonathan watching Will and a now powerless El, Steve taking care of the rest of the party).

After, silence falls and a beat passes before Steve realizes with a shock that he's been staring at Jonathan's mouth. The past few hours had felt like helping Nancy study for chemistry, or talking quietly with her after dinner with Barb's parents. Flirty and intimate and tender and he can't focus and he can't take his eyes off Jonathan's mouth.

Jonathan sees this and feels his heart pick up before letting out a quiet "Steve?"

Steve jerks forward, leaning in and pressing his mouth to Jonathan's, firm and gentle. Jonathan kisses back almost immediately. It's closed mouth, but tender and ends just as quickly as it started.

They pull away and blink at each other and then they both start to panic. Jonathan jumps up and starts to pace. Steve's literally wringing his hands, watching Jonathan's feet instead of his face.

Jonathan's the first to speak. "That was..."

"A kiss," Steve finishes for him, because he may not know what he's doing, but he can still state the obvious. "But I mean I'm- and you're-"
