High school was really weird.
Despite already being a sophomore, Jonathan couldn't get used to any of this at all. If given the opportunity, he'd be very glad to leave and be left on his own.
However, Steve makes it a bit bearable sometimes. Steve Harrington, his childhood friend since third grade.. The two of them were an inseparable duo, yet they were complete opposites. Jonathan was reserved, quiet and didn't like getting up on anyone's business. Steve was really extroverted, constantly called attention on himself and was actually really nosy about everything and everyone. Unfortunately, Steve sort of attracted the wrong crowd on him. He's seen the way Tommy and Carol look at people who don't remotely match their status, and they're dirty looks. They'd throw out insults too, for the fun of it, but only kept repeating the process if the victim reacted.
Luckily, Steve tries avoiding hanging out with them often. He's complained about them to Jonathan a million times by now, and Jonathan always asks the same thing: 'Why don't you just drop them?'. Every single time, it's like Steve is flabbergasted by someone even remotely considering that as an option. That's one of his faults, that he can't just drop things despite knowing they're bad. Steve just says he has a reputation to uphold, to which Jonathan calls bullshit on that since they're still friends, the hearthrob and the freak . He's mentioned that to him before, but Steve just replied with 'You're just different.'
It's endearing. Steve cares so much about his popularity. Like, he tries making sure that he's at least swooned three girls in one day, looked hot during practice, and all this other nonsense.. And then he just casually approaches Jonathan in the hallways like it's nothing. He sits and has lunch with him every day , despite knowing the comments his group were going to say once lunch ended. He even brings extra food for Jonathan if he's been feeling under the weather.
Jonathan's seen the weird looks girls give him and Steve when they're eating lunch together, looks of 'you're really sitting with him ?' and 'you definitely deserve better, Steve', and yet Steve just didn't give a shit. All this reputation nonsense just magically disappears when he's with Jonathan. It frustrates Jonathan, and he doesn't even know why. He was just weird like that, getting frustrated over the little things.
It was 12:30 pm on a Friday. Jonathan was sat down on an empty lunch table, school food in front of him. It was really bad, but his mom didn't have enough to make lunch for both him and Will (she refuses to make them pay for school lunches, so they've grown used to just bringing their own), so she gave both of them some lunch money (which both brothers were shocked by) and said she'll get groceries after work. She probably wasted at least a third of her grocery wages, but she just wants to make sure her sons actually get their proper amount of meals. It was sweet, but the food was still really bad .
"Jon!" A familiar voice called out. That nickname would've felt extremely weird if it were anyone else calling him that, but this was Steve Harrington. He made up every possible nickname to call Jonathan other than his actual name for.. some reason. Jonathan didn't know whether it was out of spite, or just because he felt like Jonathan was too formal to call your friend from elementary school.
Steve sat at the opposite side of him, scoffing at the lunch tray in front of his friend.
"You? Eating school lunch? Really?" He asked, raising a brow. He meant that lightheartedly of course, Steve meant a lot of things in a lighthearted way. Jonathan shrugged, a small smile forming on his face.
