Chapter 4:

He doesn't expect it to become a routine.

Joyce asks questions about where he's getting money from and Jonathan begs her not to ask, but promises that he's being safe.

She trusts him, of course she does, but she's worried. Of course she is.

And because of that, she checks his pupils constantly, leaning in and smelling his breath sometimes like she... thinks he's into drugs? Which Jonathan points out that he would have less money if that were the case, not the other way around.

Steve comes by the house twice a week, tells Jonathan to sneak over to his every once in a while when his mom and Will are both home, but most of it happens at school.

He's lost count on how many times-how many 'lessons', it's been.

Everything changes though when he finally decides that maybe it's time he says something about it. Because Steve seems content to keep doing it, but how many blow jobs does a guy have to perform before he feels ready for other... for other people?

Jonathan doesn't know a lot about his feelings for Steve, it's a complicated mess most of the time, but he knows he doesn't like the idea of Steve using him to get better with other guys.

He's not averse to seeing Steve with girls, he probably wouldn't be with guys either, that's not the problem. Or, so he thinks. But his brain gets stuck on the idea of himself being out of the picture. That's the part he doesn't like, he thinks.

It's really complicated and confusing.

But then he just ups and says something probably stupid when he shouldn't have said anything at all. They don't talk a lot in general and it's one of the few times they do, and he doesn't immediately realize he's said something wrong.

"You know, you don't really need more practice at this," he says as Steve stands back upright, shifting the front of his own jeans.

His eyes snap up to Jonathan's as his smile drops, this very unusual look on his face, one Jonathan doesn't think he's ever seen before, but it makes him feel cold almost immediately. He doesn't think he said something bad, if anything it was a compliment.

Maybe he should... clarify.

He smiles, trying to show Steve that it's okay, that he's not trying to insult or humiliate him, "You pretty much blow my brains out every time, I don't think it gets much better than that."

Steve's expression flickers for a second, something that looks like pain or hurt, Jonathan isn't sure, because then he goes completely stone-faced, nodding to himself as he turns to pick up his backpack, humming and slinging it over his shoulder.

"Yeah, I guess you're right."

Jonathan frowns in confusion, starting to follow after him as Steve moves to the sliding-glass door, pulling it open for him.

"What-" he starts to ask, but stops himself.

Normally he sticks around for a little bit, watching tv or whatever, and Steve comes back in for seconds or thirds - on the couch, in his bedroom. It's not a routine but... well, maybe it is? Considering he doesn't understand why he's meant to go so early, maybe they do have some kind of routine built around one another at this point.

"You should leave," Steve says, wiping his mouth and jaw with his open palm as he motions for Jonathan to go.

Jonathan chuckles nervously, moving to the door as he pulls on his jacket, "Okay, sure. You're still coming over tomorrow night?"

Steve meets him with a flat stare and shakes his head.

He's never seen someone change face so fast before, not even Lonnie, which is saying something. But whatever Steve's feeling, thinking, he gives nothing away now.

Jonathan feels sick to his stomach and confused, but he leaves, walking out the back door and around to the trees across the way.

He hears the door close behind him, shoves his hands in his pockets, and tries to tell himself that it'll be okay. Maybe he just said something that rubbed Steve the wrong way, maybe it sounded like he was implying that Steve was a slut or something?

The guy kind of is, but he's never seemed to have an issue with it before.
