The Love of Money

The necktie was green.
That's how you know
the he loved money.
It wasn't because
he loved trees,
or verdant pasture,
or mint chocolate chip
ice cream.
It was because he loved money
and the color green
symbolizes money.
Not trees, not grass, not mint.
It was green for a reason.
It wasn't random chance.
One of the possible colors
from off of the color wheel.
Not a gift from his secretary,
or his sister-in-law,
or niece, or what-have-you,
or because it matched
his grandmother's eyes,
and it wasn't because
green neckties were on clearance
at the store where he got his ties.
Oh now, we all know what it means,
that it's because of his love of money.
No respectable author
would bother mentioning
the color of an object
wound around some character's neck
unless it held some deep meaning
and insightful revelation
into the depth of that character's soul.
And no respectable character
would be seen in a green tie
without first falling in love
with green paper bills.
