I fell into a comma
yes, you read that right
I was writing up a sentence
and walked into one at night
I couldn't remember where it went
I tried, and tried, and tried
I thought that I had it figured out
but then the comma went to hide
and so I continued going
without a place to pause
to catch my breath or stop writing
or link an independent clause
I wanted to list the reasons
that a comma could be used
but without a comma between them
it was a jumble and confused
and so I said to myself, "Self,"
a name for Me, I quote, appositive,
and a vocative, a usage I endorse
went missing all the way to Oxford
you see, I found it
the comma ran its course.
