When they got to the kitchen where the women were making lunch, they dropped their baskets of tomatoes on the kitchen table and made to go back to their room but was stopped by Mrs Alice who was already at the door without their knowledge. The woman stood there with her legs wide open and folded arms, glaring daggers into them like they had done something wrong again.
The girls stood fixated to the ground with their lips parted open wide, wondering what they had done wrong to deserve this kind of silent treatment from Mrs Alice especially when they'd just finished running an errand for her. The woman was always finding ways to make them the guilty ones even when they didn't do anything to warrant her wrath. She was just someone they couldn't satisfy no matter the length they went to.
That was what the devilish woman did that morning. Waking them up at an inappropriate time with a bucket of cold water with a stern note that they had to fetch two baskets full of tomatoes for lunch.
First of all, who the hell woke up very early In the morning to start preparing for lunch when they haven't even eaten breakfast and why did it have to be them Mrs Alice assigned the job to? If the woman wanted them out if the orphanage to the streets, she could have just admitted it already.
Mrs Alice adjusted her reading glasses carefully and sized up the girls like she always did anytime she saw them. She didn't know why anyone would find fun in making trouble all around and still act calm at the same time. She definitely had to knock some senses into their empty skulls and make them realize there was something called boundaries.
Taking in a sharp breath, she retorted in a tone that sounded warning. "Meet me in my office right now or forget about sleeping in your room tonight." With this, she stormed off the room angrily to the surprise of everyone in the kitchen.
Samantha shook her head in frustration and recoiled into a deep frown. She wondered why the owner of the orphanage would employ such a person with an ugly character without studying her for a while. It wouldn't be a surprise if Mrs Alice first approach to the CEO was quite nice. The woman had a way of turning things around and putting people in a confused state. No wonder she had no husband or children to return home back to, for she was always picking on people for odd reasons.
"What's wrong with her, again? She doesn't take a chill pill once a while?"
Veronica scoffed loudly to cover her uneasiness and gritted her teeth in embarrassment. If at all Mrs alice wanted to summon them for something important, she could have placed the words in a more pleasant way without having to react like a thunderstruck person right in front of everyone in the kitchen. She was always up with odd attitudes everytime. "We're about to listen to another lifetime story of what transpired between cats and dogs and made them enemies. She never gets tired."
They arrived just in time to Mrs Alice's office where the woman had already taken her seat and was holding a couple of shopping lists in her hand, observing them thoroughly. Beside her were a few hundred dollar notes and a short letter that seemed to have been received from the orphanage owner. Veronica and Samantha stood side by side beside the entrance door, like criminals who were about to get probed for commiting a big crime.
The woman didn't bait an eyelid on them until she was done with her checking. She dropped the lists on the table finally and straightened up quickly before resting her gaze on the girls. She eyed them for a while before looking away. "I heard about your fight with Evelyn."
Samantha and Veronica stared at each other in awe for a while at what the woman had just said. The fight happened a few days ago and it wasn't even a battle of fists. Besides, no one was present when it happened to have reported it to Mrs Alice. How come she already knew about it? If truly no one was eves dropping the day they were arguing, It only meant one thing _ Evelyn reported them to Mrs Alice herself!
