After the gemologist and every other person left, the cleaning of the room began and the occupants jumped in to retrieve their belongings with satisfactory smiles on their faces. They've finally succeeded in bringing the proud clique to a precipitous end. And for the main time, they'd have some peace in the orphanage with less worries. Thanks to Lestat who'd brought in the gemologist, the truth had been brought into exposure and the bad tags they might have gotten as thieves were all returned to Evelyn and her friends without much hinderance. It was a good thing Martha informed them about the hairpin; with her loyalty, they were able to conquer Evelyn easily.
"It was a dumb thing Evelyn chose you to frame Samantha up." Angie, one of the roommates said with remark and a smile crinkled on her face. "Don't say, I know she thought you were a gullible person and asked you to do it."
Martha didn't hesitate to give an answer, pausing only long enough to gather her things from the floor before straightening her back to stand on her feet, she grinned lightly. She recalled how Evelyn had summoned her into her room last night and promised to help her get into the next competition that was coming up in a few weeks if she helped her hide the hairpin in Samantha's bag. Without being told, Martha knew there was no forth coming competition until the next year but decided to play along with her so she could be exposed in front of those who'd been supporting her. Luckily, her plan worked out smoothly.
"She thought I was so desperate about entering the beauty contest and decided to use the opportunity against Samantha. Little did she know I was way bigger than that. How could i sacrifice my friend for a contest?"
Samantha sighed and turned her thoughts inward, a shadow of grief passing over her expression for some seconds, an emotion Lestat was quick recognize. Then, she turned all bright-eyed warmth again, alive to the moment. She walked over to Martha and pulled her into a warm hug, sniffling. "You still helped me even when I'm not an advantage to you. Thank you so much, martha. I promise to repay your kindness."
"Don't say that, Sam. You've helped me a lot of times and even provided when I needed, there's no need for a repay, please." And the hug tightened.
Veronica joined in the hug and snuggled them into her arms tightly without a care. She was very glad Samantha was okay and acknowledged the kindness of Martha. But inside, she burned fiercely and wanted badly more than anything to drive a knife into Evelyn's skull for the attention she'd drawn toward them. The truth might have been revealed but the news would still keep going and those who heard only half of the story might think they were the guilty ones. Was there any remedy to that? Every other person might be satisfied with the equal share of justice, but she wasn't. It might now or later, but she was going to bring their enemity to another level. And by doing that, she had to find out more about what she overheard Evelyn saying last night.
Veronica snickered lightly and hid her expression before anyone could notice it.
They released each other and continued working. Samantha ushered Lestat to sit on her bed for a while with pleading eyes on the promise that she'd be done in a few minutes. Without anyone telling her, she knew he was claustrophobic and didn't like staying with people he wasn't very familiar with; the slight shivering of his hands and clasping at intervals made her know that. She'd already sensed his uneasy mood and tried to wrap things up quickly so they could see him back to his car. He'd already helped them with what they needed and there was no need to continue delaying a busy person like him. "I'm sorry, Lestat. They made a great mess here."
Lestat replied her with a smile and signalled to to get to carry on with her work. He was in no hurry to head back home and infact, he had somewhere to take the girls to. The uneasy mood he was in wasn't because he was in the girls' room but for the fact that he just remembered something important. In his mind, he wondered if his suspicions were indeed true and immediately felt the urge to confirm it. Did Mrs Williams finally carry out her plan?
