"Grace, why are you just an intern?", asks Andy, first thing in the morning.
"I didn't even have time to take my coat off and you're already asking the tough questions".
"Move to Manchester with me".
"You're married".
"Yes, and to a man. You're gorgeous, lovely, but not my type at all. I mean move with me to work with me".
"But you work here in London. Am I missing something?"
He looks around to see if anyone is listening and given the fact that it's only us in the office right now, I'm pretty sure no one is. "I'm getting a new, better job".
"In Manchester?"
He nods.
A part of me is incredibly happy for him. Andy has been nothing but a great boss. He's always treated me well, which in this industry is not that common. And he, alongside Amirah, has helped me massively with my networking. He's been taking me to as many events as Amirah has, introducing me to all the right people.
"That's incredible", I say, hugging him. "I'll miss you, though".
"You don't have to miss me if you come with me!"
"I appreciate it but I can't. My life is here".
I can see the disappointment written all over his face. "The offer will still stand when I leave. Just know that".
"Thank you".

"God, I'm so nervous!"
The office is full today and everyone is terrified of the news they might not get. January means that fashion week is around the corner and the teams that attend each week will be selected today.
"Do you think you might be going to New York, Gracie?", asks Bryan, one of the permanent writers for the magazine.
"Who, the intern? Don't make me laugh", says Em, always quick to make a comment about me.
"Yeah, I'm just an intern. There is plenty of time for me to go in the future".
"Cute, she thinks she'll ever be someone important. She's just adorable".
"Em, leave her!", laughs Bryan. But I ignore them. They think they can hurt me with their bitchiness, as if I hadn't been dealing with comments like those for years.
I go back to my desk after somehow being able to get a cup of coffee, despite the crowd in the kitchen. I have articles to write and I'll soon have to help sort everything out for New York, so I better get things done.
Hours later, people are already leaving the office with different expressions. Most of them are disappointed because Amirah had to explain to them the groups that can travel this season are smaller due to budget issues.
"I can't believe I'm not going to New York. I've been there the last 8 seasons, what am I supposed to do?", I hear Em say. She's also crying, which makes me feel bad about her. She's bitchy, sure. But even I don't cry in public, in front of people I don't like. She must feel really bad.
"Grace! Where have you been?", asks Andy when he gets to my desk.
"Here? Working".
"Why didn't you come to see who was going to New York like everyone else?"
"Because I'm an intern and I knew I would be able to tell by looking at their faces".
"You frustrate me so much sometimes, Wells", he says, sitting down next to me. "You are coming to New York".
