"AYO!" I yell as I walk into the Rodriguez household.

"Kitchen!" I hear Jen yell in response.

I walk in to find Jen looking like a character from The Corpse Bride.

Love that movie but that's not the point.

There are massive bags under her eyes and she looks super pale.

"You look awful." I say as I walk over to her.

"Gee thanks." she remarks in the scratchiest voice I've ever heard her with.

How did I not here it when she shouted at me not 10 seconds ago?

"You okay?" I ask.

"I didn't get a lot of sleep last night and my sister wouldn't stop talking." she tells me.

"Bout what?"

"Herself."

I was about to offer to get her something when Benny's voice cut me off.

"Hey, princesa." he says, catching my attention as he walks over to me.

He didn't sleep over at my house last night since I told him he shouldn't give his aunt a reason to get pissy.

He insisted she wouldn't care but I don't wanna take chances and possibly cause things to get riled up in which case I would have no choice to whoop her ass with my words or my physical aggression.

Which one would be up to her.

I know Jen wouldn't care but I don't just go around looking to get in fights.

I have enough practice as it is.

"Get a room." his aunt says as she joins us in the kitchen.

The fuck dude...

"Okay." Benny agrees and grabs my arm to drag me back to his room but I don't move.

"You want me to get you some cough drops or something." I ask Jen quietly.

"Could you?" she asks, meaning she does want some. "And some water please."

I walk over to the drawer that has the cough drops and pull out three.

I place those on the counter in front of her before getting her a glass of water.

"What's the plan?" Benny asks me.

"I don't expect it to be much different than last year." I answer.

"Oh. I can start making breakfast." Jen says, about to get up.

"No, no, no." I tell her, practically pushing her back into her seat and setting the glass of water in front of her. "Me and Benny will make breakfast, you will stay here and supervise."

"You guys do that. I'm gonna go find somewhere that has more... entertaining beverages than eggnog and hot chocolate." Jen's sister states as she walks to the front door.

"Day drinking already, Val?" Jen asks making no effort to stop her.

"Technically it's not day drinking if it's past 10." she responds before shutting the door on her way out.

I hope the handle hit her ass and bruised her bottom.

"What?" me and Benny ask in unison.

"I don't even know." Jen says before taking a big gulp of water. "Recipe book for the pancakes are in the cabinet next to the microwave."
