After 'confessions night' last week, things are surprisingly really good between me and Benny.
I totally thought we'd be awkward and constantly flustered around each other but we're realy not.
We're still kinda flustered but we're not embarassed.
We don't have to worry about not knowing how the other feels whenever someone makes a comment about us. It's like dating someone without dating someone. We're both taken but we don't do the romantic stuff yet. Not to say there aren't a few times I catch Benny staring at me. He has no reason to hide it any more so he doesn't. The boys all tease him but he doesn't even care enough to respond with a comeback or tell them to shut up. Plus, it gets me blushing which he gets a massive kick out of.
Anyway...
Today is the first day we're all going back to the sandlot. The boys had to take a few days off to get back to normal so we haven't played since the carnival.
We all stoped at Vincent's before going to the sandlot to pick up a ball. Courtesy of myself.
Besides me and Benny's awareness for the other's feelings, which we haven't told to any of the boys, there's nothing out of the ordinary.
We get to the sandlot and put our things down in the dugout.
"What are my chances you'll teach me the slide-stand-up today?" Benny asks me, whispering into my ear from behind.
"And have my one special ability no longer a secret? Not good." I say turning around to face him. Didn't think he was standing that close.
"Fine. Fine. But I could teach myself." he says back. "You helping me will just make the process shorter."
"You can't teach yourself."
"And why's that?"
"You don't know the inner mechanics. Sure you can figure out the basics from watching me do it, but you won't get much father. I only figured it out becuase I had already done it and felt what do when. You'd need me to teach you."
"Lily!" Squints says grabbing my attention. "Did you figure out how to do the cool slide thing you did when we beat Phillips' team?"
"Yeah I did." I say grabbing my mitt of the bench.
"Could you show us again?!" Bertram asks me eargerly.
I smile to myself as I take my mitt off and toss it to Benny.
I walk towards fourth base and the boys all follow me excited to see it again.
When I reach fourth base, I turn to face home plate.
I slightly dig my right foot into the ground before I take off.
I slide and go through with the move with no problem.
While the boys were on their break, I came here alone and practiced til it became muscle memory.
I look back at them to see all of them, including Benny, with their mouths hanging open.
They hadn't said anything and it started to become them staring at me. I walk over to the group and grab my mitt from Benny's hand.
"Base up. Come on." I say, walking to third base.
After a few seconds they all head to their positions and Benny goes back to the dugout to grab his bat.
When he walks up to home plate, he looks at me and winks.
HE FUCKING WINKS IN FRONT OF EVERYONE
I know most of the boys couldn't even see it. When I say most I mean 7 out of the 8.
