20. The Trick

The Neverseen are here. I'm worried. Blair just got back and what if she gets hurt or taken again.

We walk outside. Blair has barely said anything. I'm worried about her. She can't get taken or hurt.

We stand as the Neverseen are stepping forward. I nudge her softly as she's glaring forward.
"It'll be okay." She transmits to me before looking forward again.

What's going on?

They get to us. Mom takes off her hood and looks at me.
"Keefe." She says softly.
"Leave him alone." Blair says. Mom looks away from me and to her.

Blair steps forward.
"I'm glad you finally decided to join us." Mom says. Blair starts walking towards them.
"B?" I ask confused. She glances at me for a second.

"I took everything you said into consideration. How you'll help me achieve a greater power, how you'll protect me, blah, blah, blah." Blair says.

I can feel my heart shatter as she continues to step forward. This has to be a joke. Am I dreaming?

I look over at everyone else to see if they're also shocked.

"You belong with us." Mom says.
"See it's great and all, except there's on little thing that just doesn't seem to stop bothering me." Blair says now only a foot away.

"You're a fucking pain." Blair says digging her dagger into my moms stomach.

I feel the world freeze.

The cloaked figure behind Blair stabs her in the back. Blair screams and falls.
"B!" I yell running forward.

I fall to her side.
"Where's Kalo?" She asks trying to sit up. I look up and see him fighting someone.
"He's right there." I say.
"They need to take her. Anyone." She mutters. She's in obvious pain.

I look behind me and see she made a shield around mom.

"B, I need to get you out of here." I say seeing the neverseen looking at her. She starts to shake her head. I pick her up anyways.

I get away from the crowd.
"Keefe, put me down. It hurts." She starts crying. I set her down carefully.
"I need to get you to Elwin." I say.
"Keefe." She mutters tears rolling down her face. "The blade was poisoned." My heart stops. I shake my head.

"Elwin can fix it." I say feeling a tear roll down my cheek. She smiles at me softly.
"Do me a favor."
"Anything, just let me help you."
"Keep Maddy safe."
"I want to keep you safe." I say practically begging her to let me do something, anything.

"It's too late." She whispers cupping my cheek. I grab onto her hand while shaking my head.

She starts struggling to breathe.
"Please." I beg. "I love you, Blair. I love you. Please don't go." I say holding her head up.
"I'd kiss you, but you'd be poisoned too." She whispers.

I debate it.

"I love you." I whisper. She wipes my tear softly.
"I love you." She mutters before her eyes close.

She's still breathing. Barely. But breathing.

I pick her up as quickly and carefully as possible.

I look behind me and see everyone fighting. My unconscious mother is getting carried away by Ro and Kalo.

I grab the pathfinder and hold it up to the light. I concentrate fully on Blair.

She can't die. I need her.

I run in and set her down on the bed, as I try to explain what happened to Elwin.

Bullhorn, Elwin's banshee starts freaking out and flying around us.

My heart drops.

"She can't die." I say to Elwin. "Please."
"Keefe, you need to step out." He says looking at me. I shake my head unable to speak. "I'm going to do everything I can." He says.

I turn around and walk out.

I slide down the wall.

She has to be okay. I don't know what I'm going to do if she isn't.

I burry my face into my hands.

It feels like hours go by until Bullhorn goes silent.

My heart drops as I sit up. I stare at the door.

Elwin comes out.

My heart feels like it is about to beat out of my chest.

"She's going to be okay." He says. I let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding.
"Really?" I ask. He nods with a slight smile.
"She's tough, that one."
"Yeah, she is." I say smiling softly.

"Can I see her?"
"Come on in."

I walk in and see her laying on the bed. Bullhorn is back in his normal spot. I like that.

I walk to her side and sit down.

"I was scared she wasn't going to make it." I whisper.
"That poison was the most complicated thing I've ever dealt with." He says.
"Like it was made to destroy her?"
"Yeah."
"They made it to kill her."
"They can't though. She's too powerful."
"She's our little ball of power." A voice says from the door. It's Ro. She smiles at me softly.

"You okay, Hunkyhair?" She asks. I nod.
"She's okay." I say.
"Good. I can't have you all mopey." She says and I roll my eyes.

"When will she wake up?" I ask Elwin.
"Don't know, again this is crazy work I had to do. But soon."
"Like how soon?" Ro asks.
"It could be a couple hours to a couple days." He says. I don't like that answer but nod anyways.

Anything is better than her never waking up.

"You should go get some rest, Keefe. You'll be the first to know when she's up." Elwin says.
"The first? Over Alice and Gale?"
"Take the win and let's go." Ro says.
"But-."
"She'll be okay, Keefe." Elwin says as Ro grabs my arm.
"I'll be back tomorrow!" I yell trying to stop Ro.

She finally lets go of me when we get out. I lightleap us.

"Are you ever gonna tell her?" She asks me.
"What?"
"That you're in love with her."
"I kinda did."
"Was it a 'you're about to die I love you' or like a 'i'm in love with you and can't live without you' thing."
"Well she was going to die so I couldn't say my prepared speech." I say.

"Or worse was it a friendly I love you?" She asks gasping.
"Stop, now I don't even know."
"You should tell her."
"I'm not going to do that."
"Why not?"
"Why risk it if she might not feel the same?"

"Oh my god. You're so blind. How is that even possible?"
"What?"
"You're an empath. You feel what she feels. Do you like not feel it?"
"Feel what? I don't understand."
"You are so stupid. She loves you too."
