Exactly 64 weeks had gone by without even a single moment of happiness. Without a single smile, or even the smallest grin. The Walkers were multiplying while humanity was starving. And so was I, Deanne Rawley, someone who used to be an ordinary girl. The Walkers changed everyone. Personality wasn't a thing anymore, it wasn't important. Survive was what it was all about. Keeping healthy and staying away from the Walkers had become a sport.
Waking up by the sound of moaning Walkers had become a ritual. It changed from a frightening sound to something calm. They didn't want to hurt anyone but something controlled their minds. The people who once rule planet Earth now became wild animals.
I discovered new areas to try to find other survivors, but I never found one. Not one good person who survived so far aswell. It was something I didn't want to believe, it wasn't possible that I was the strongest out of all. I couldn't be the one that either had to become a hero and clear up the mess or die as last human being.
Finding a safe place to stay for the night was for most people an important thing but it didn't really bother me. Dark didn't just mean I couldn't see a shit, it also meant the Walkers couldn't see anything. Of course they still had their amazing noses which could kill me, but I was smarter than that. Covering myself up in blood wasn't a dirty thing to do anymore, it became normal.
When my dad was bitten, he hold my hand and looked me in the eyes. ''Dan...'' He whispered and cried without making any noise. I didn't answer, I didn't want to. I knew what was about to happen but I wasn't ready for it. ''Danger is something that comes along with humanity. But, you can fight it.'' He whispered softly before he closed his eyes and blew out his last bit of breath. Without a tear I shot him through the head.
The moaning of the Walkers came closer, and I knew it was time to grab my stuff and move along with the Walkers. It had become a strategy I wasn't entirely sure about but I tried. Me and the Dead walked through the streets I had never seen before. Nothing gave me clues about where I was, all I knew was that I wasn't safe. The moon was shining brightly as if nothing had happened. The streets were quiet but something told me this wasn't right. My eyes weren't the best, but because of this my ears became much better. The old, dirty shoes of the Walkers shambled over the street. Some bumped into a lamppost which attracted the other Walkers. Once they found out it was just some metal, they continued their walk for fresh meat.
We passed by several houses, maybe with even more Walkers in them. It was a long journey before I arrived at an interesting place. The house I was at looked modern and almost untouched. I couldn't stop thinking about if there was any food in the house but at the same time I didn't have any gear. I could either go in there and take my chances or just follow the Dead for my own safety.
With one hand I hold a pointy stick, and with my other hand I softly tried to open the door. As expected it didn't work and at that point I decided to climb up and try for a window. The only dangerous thing was that some Walker might hear me. Without any noise I climbed up and opened the window. The Walkers were already far away from me, so most of them didn't notice a thing. I still heard some moaning, so I decided to hurry and get in.
I let myself fall on the wooden floor and closed the window carefully. With a beautiful kitchen around me, I started exploring. I didn't care about clearing the building, all I wanted was food. The fridge had loads of food in them, which was slightly suspected but my mind wasn't functioning as it should be. I ate a full tin of fruit and I drank some tap water. My ears caught footsteps coming up the stairs. Before I even could turn around, someone spoke.
''Oli, you do it.'' I heard a voice say. The voice sounded frightened and weak. My arms raised themselves and with arms above my head I turned around. ''Please, don't shoot.'' I said, but unless the boy I didn't sound frightened. Two boys appeared in my vision. One had a gun and the other one was just behind the one with the gun. ''If you want to kill me, you might wanna use a knife.'' I said, trying to even help these people out. My voice had not made any noise for the last 33 weeks and it sounded like crap. The boys clearly didn't understand what I meant. ''Noise attracts them.'' I explained simply and put down the tin of food. The boys didn't look less scared when they saw I was a human, they looked even more frightened. ''I'll leave immediately, I didn't know someone was living here.'' I apologized and waited for any response. ''Shoot her!'' The blonde one said and pointed at me. The guy, I assume his name's Oli, stood there with one gun pointed at me. ''Who are you?'' He asked instead of pulling the trigger. I frowned but began introducing myself. Introducing wasn't something you did when you saw other survivors. You often just pulled the trigger and stole their supplies. ''Deanne, just another survivor.'' I said and coughed. These boys wouldn't do any bad on me, I knew that. They obviously stayed in for this long time and didn't had a clue about what was going on. ''You can take my supplies if you want and I can leave.'' I suggested because I knew that was what they wanted. ''We have to let her stay.'' I heard Oli whisper to the blonde guy who disagreed. ''Remember what happened to Joe? We can't let that happen again.'' Blonde guy said. Oli nodded and thought about it. ''What supplies do you have?'' He asked me sort of friendly. I sat down on my knees and opened my little bag pack. ''I've got bandages, a flashlight and an empty bottle.'' I said as I unpacked my bag. ''Is that all you've got?'' Blondie asked and looked to my things. ''Pretty much.'' I said and got up again. ''Sit down, on the couch.'' Oli instructed me, something I didn't expect to happen. He sounded pretty serious which made me concern a bit. ''Caspar, keep her under shot.'' Oli told Blondie. Caspar got the gun and pointed it to my face while Oli walked to the bag pack. He picked up the bottle and filled it with tap water. Then he got some other tins with fruit from the fridge and put them in my bag pack. ''Alright, here you go.'' He said and hold out the bag pack. ''Wait, what?'' I said not understanding. ''You have to go now, sorry.'' Oli said and waited for me to grab the bag pack full of food. ''You're not going to shoot me?'' I asked and Oli nodded. ''Please go now.'' Caspar said, still frightened. I honestly felt really bad for those two guys. ''Can I give you one last piece of advice?'' I asked the boys who nodded as reply. ''Keep quiet in this little house of yours. It looks pretty safe and you have enough food to survive for a little while. Whatever you do, don't go out there.'' I told them before I walked to the window and opened it again. After a quick check on the outside, I slipped through the window and got outside. With a short nod I said goodbye to the scared friends.
