''What's your name?'' Joe suddenly asked the new comer, who was surprised to hear Joe say anything. ''I'm Alfie, Alfie Deyes.'' He said as he drank a bit from my tap water. ''I'm Joe and that's Deanne.'' Joe introduced us. We had been walking for at least 5 hours, and it was now mid day. ''Could we possibly take a rest?'' Alfie asked us as he stopped walking. He was all sweaty, and was breathing heavily. My first thought was that he might have been bitten, but I immediately shook off that thought. My ears concentrated and picked up the sound of floating water. ''Just a little bit further, can you manage that?'' I asked him and Alfie nodded. Joe wasn't talking much, but I bet he was thinking about his friends.
We arrived at the little brook, and settled ourselves. ''Drink or wash yourself a bit.'' I said as I filled my bottle of water. Alfie sat down in the brook and sighed. He smiled a tiny bit, and surely enjoyed the water. He and Joe drank and washed themselves with the water, and so did I. ''Why don't we just stay here for ever?'' I heard Alfie ask us while he was laying in the water, watching the sky. ''We're on our way to find Joe's friends, so me and Joe are not staying here.'' I said, trying to say that he still had the option to stay here by himself. ''How do you know your friends are still alive?'' Alfie asked Joe, who began explaining the complicated story. As soon as Alfie understood, he got up from the water and slowly pulled on his shirt and pants. When we found Alfie, he was close to starving, but after a few meals everything was already a bit better. He could walk with our help, and his voice was working again.
''What are we waiting for then?'' He said. And off we go, we walked for more seconds, more minutes and more hours. We talked a bit about just the casual things like movies and series. Joe was obsessed with the Inbetweeners and Alfie really enjoyed watching the Tweeman Show or something. This conversation felt like everything was back to normal. We were just friends chatting to each other. The feeling was great but at the same time so abnormal.
More hours passed by and we arrived in no where when sun began setting. ''We need to find somewhere we can stay for the night.'' Joe told us but Alfie disagreed. ''I think we should walk the night.'' He said and looked to the moon which was raising in the sky. ''We might arrive tomorrow evening when we walk for the night.'' I slightly agreed but on the other hand I wanted the guys to have some sleep. ''Are you guys sure you want to do that for me?'' Joe asked surprised. ''Definitely. You are helping me, so I will help you.'' Alfie said and continued walking. Me and Joe were just behind Alfie. I smiled to the new friend I made. ''We will find them soon enough. I told them they had to stay inside, and I bet they're smart enough to do what I advised them.'' I encouraged Joe when he looked a bit afraid. ''Did I ever properly thank you for the rescue?'' Joe asked me, not paying attention to what I just said to him. ''I'm sure you did.'' My thong felt a bit dry so I got out my tap water and drank a bit. ''I don't think I did.'' Joe said but didn't continue with the thank you. ''I was just doing the right thing, don't need a thank you for that.'' I said smiling and looked into the dark.
Now that the power was off, loads of stars appeared in the sky. Moon was almost a full one and sun had disappeared for the night. Some footsteps and the air blowing through the leafs. Nothing to worry about. ''Maybe there has been such an apocalypse before. Maybe only the animals survived. Maybe humanity was born over again.'' Alfie was thinking out loud and it sounded pretty logical to be honest. ''Every building should disappear to make it right.'' Joe added, he sounded a bit annoyed by Alfie. I didn't add my opinion but just continued the walk.
We kept walking for the whole night, and when sun began raising I noticed we were close by. ''I recognize this area, we're close now.'' I told the others, and I heard Joe sigh relieved. A few minutes later we arrived at the white building. I chuckled when I saw the broken window in the kitchen. ''Someone sneaked into the-'' Joe began but I cut him off and explained that it was me who broke in. Caspar and Oli were smart enough to cover the gap of the window with wooden planks. ''Where are more windows?'' I asked Joe, who immediately lead the way to the back of the apartment where some windows were. ''Alright. Follow me close, you guys.'' I said as I broke the window and got in. Just because this was the friend's house, didn't mean there weren't dangerous things set up.
Luckily I was wrong, and we arrived in the living room. ''Oli, Caspar? It's me, Joe!'' Joe began to scream. I wanted to shush him but I didn't. He wanted to see his friends, so I let him scream for a while. After a minute I shushed Joe and we split up. ''We've to clear the house, maybe they're sleeping or hiding.'' I told the two boys who agreed. We cleared room to room, but didn't find anything. Not even in a closet or under a bed. Joe began freaking out, and I felt so bad for him. ''There's no way for them to get out of this house. The windows are all locked from the inside, and the wooden planks are also locking from the inside.'' I thought out loud and then remembered the front door. It used to be locked, so when it is open it would mean the two friends left the house. I speeded up to the front door and tried to open it. The door opened.
Caspar and Oli were gone.
