We were walking for a few hours when sun began setting. ''What's your name?'' I asked while I walked in front of him, leading the way. ''Joeseph, erm, Joe.'' He mumbled. ''Where's your gun?'' I asked him without turning around to look at him in the eyes. Joe might look innocent but who knows, this might be a trap or something. ''I don't have a gun.'' Joe responded surprised. I immediately stopped walking and turned around. I heard Joe stopped walking aswell. I stared at him, looked him straight in the eyes and stayed like that for a minute or so. He looked nervous, but not the type of nervous you are when you're lying. ''Explain the gunshots then.'' I said to him as I turned around to walk further. He sighed relieved and caught up so he would walk right next to me. ''I got kidnapped by some weird guys. They used me to distract the Biters as they would do something I don't know about. Tied me up on a tree just so the Biters could slowly eat me. The boss shot to get more of the Biters at one spot.'' Joe explained and I noticed he was exhausted. ''Alright then.'' I said and pointed at a little cave besides a brook. ''We have to clear the cave before we settle.'' I whispered at Joe and slowly tiptoed closer to the cave. With my knuckles I knocked on the outside of the cave but I didn't get any moaning as respond. ''Keep close.'' I said and quickly grabbed a stone. The cave was probably the smallest one I had ever seen. It wasn't even 2 square meters but it was just enough for both of us to fit in. ''Alright, it's clear.'' I whispered to Joe and immediately heard the sound bumping against each wall. ''You're gonna sleep and I'll find some leaves to cover the entrée.'' I told him and he didn't protest. I stumbled outside to find any long leaves but I didn't find anything so I decided to use the oversized shirt I was wearing. The shirt was still smelling like the Walkers, which was very helpful. As soon as I covered the entrée with it, I got in and saw Joe laying down, trying to leave enough space for me. His eyes were already closed. I settled down just besides him and closed my eyes aswell, hoping that no Walker would discover this little cave.
The next morning I woke up by the sound of moaning. It was different from the moans I had heard for the last year, this sounded like a human moan. My brain quickly combined the warm body behind me with the moan and remembered there was an unknown called Joeseph laying behind me. I got out of the cave and walked to the little river. My hands felt the cold water and soon enough I was trying to push every part of my body under the water. Unfortunately the water was only like 5 centimeters high, so I could barely wash my hair but I enjoyed it. I left my underwear on and washed my other clothing. I assumed Joe wasn't going to wake up for a little while, so I had enough time to enjoy the little river. I filled my empty bottle of water and got into my wet, but clean, clothes. I don't think you can call them clean, they still had blood all over them but at least they smelled better now.
''Good morning.'' I heard Joe yawning behind me and I turned around. ''Morning.'' I said and threw him a tin of fruit. His eyes stared at the little tin, and he thought for a few seconds before leaving the subject to open the tin. ''You want me to wash your clothes?'' I asked and pointed at the shirt that was covered with blood. ''That would be great.'' Joe said and put down the tin. He reached for the bottom of his shirt and pulled it over his head before throwing it at me. I concentrated on doing the washing as he enjoyed his little meal. ''So, where are we heading today?'' Joe asked me after I finished washing his shirt. He was still shirtless, but I didn't mind. ''We're going East, maybe heading to the streets to find some more supplies.'' I said to him as he nodded. He didn't disagree with anything I said, which made me feel like he was happy to be with someone.
We left with fresh clothes on and some fruit in our tummy. ''Are you from here?'' I asked Joe and noticed I was the one walking in front again. ''No, I'm from Wiltshire actually but I moved here on my own.'' Joe said. ''Where's here?'' I continued bombing him with questions. Joe's eyes burned in my back. ''What do you mean, aren't you from here?'' He now asked me. ''That still depends on where we are.'' I said without looking him into the eyes. ''As far as I remember, we're somewhere around London.'' Joe said and now ran a few seconds to catch up with me. ''London?'' I said surprised and looked into the light colored eyes. ''I was in Ireland when this apocalypse began but I'm originally from the Netherlands.'' I spoke while my eyes were concentrating on the horizon. ''What were you doing in Ireland?'' Joe asked me. I shrugged before I answered. ''Just exploring the world, I guess.''
No movements on the horizon, everything looked so peaceful for a moment. ''You've been surviving by your own for a year?'' Joe said, not willing to believe that. ''Not really, I've been alone for 33 weeks now.'' I answered with showing him any emotions. Crying wasn't in my dictionary of emotions anymore. Non emotion was in my dictionary actually. ''Oh, I'm sorry.'' Joe immediately replied as he realized the person I was with had died. ''It's okay, I assume everybody has lost someone by now.'' I said and looked around. ''What's wrong?'' Joe asked me as I kept looking around. ''Either someone's following us or there's a zombie right there.'' I pointed at a thick tree and slowly kneeled down to grab a weapon. ''I didn't here nothing.'' Joe said and I chuckled. My hands found a rock and held it tightly. ''Come on.'' I whispered and dragged Joe with me. We ran through the woods for several minutes, and after a while I didn't hear anyone following us anymore. ''We're fine now.'' I stopped him to catch our breathes.
''Look, there's the street.'' Joe pointed a little bit further, and breathed heavily. ''Let's go there.'' I said and we slowly walked to the street. We saw something unexpected, but it wasn't that big of a deal at the same time.
''Perfect.'' Joe and I agreed.
