Chapter 52 Set the Board

*Nanami POV*

"While we did fail our last mission, it wasn't necessarily fruitless." Mr. Aizawa begins.

The image of a familiar face fills the screen before me.

"This is Daiki Hiroshi, a small-time villain up until about a year ago when his quirk seemed to have a significant boost in power." Images of Daiki with Gin scatter across the screen at different locations and times. One at a gas station, another at a convenience store and one outside the building we infiltrated. That's when I realized where I had seen him before.

I turn towards Jiro on my right just in time to see the recognition spread across her face.

"Hey, that's the guy Jiro took out, the one with the vine quirk" Midoriya voiced.

"Correct" Mr. Aizawa confirmed. "For whatever reason, he didn't get warped out with the others"

Thats probably because they thought he was dead after how thoroughly Jiro handed his ass to him. I suppress a smile at the memory.

"Luckily for us." A new voice spoke and to my mortification, principle Nezu comes out of Mr. Aizawa's scarf and slides down to the floor.

Was he in there the whole time!? Like since the dorms!?

"It seems our new informant is quite displeased with Gin" Nezu continued.

"Now that you mention it" Jiro wrapped a finger around her phone jack and tilted her head. "I do remember a few villains that night saying Gin had lost it. They didn't seem all that convinced with the entire thing"

"That's correct Miss Kioka, it seems that Gin was originally in charge of leading the Berserker experiments with Nanami. Therefore, he was the one held responsible for losing her and having the nature of their experiments exposed. Since then, Gin has been gathering his own men in the effort to get Miss Kira back and thus get on leagues good grace once again." Nezu explained.

"According to Daiki, Gin was banking on you taking out some of us once he forced your berserker form" Mr. Aizawa focused his attention on me. "Therefore, he would be giving the league not just their berserker back, but a handful of UA students and a pro with a quirk nullifying ability as well."

My stomach revolted at the thought of how much worse things could have gone that night and I was that much more grateful for the people in this room.

"How do we know we can trust Daiki's intel?" Todoroki asked. "He is a criminal after all and they don't have a repution for being honest"

"He's got a point Mr. Aizawa" Kirishima added. Doubt etched into his eyes. "I mean, he isn't even loyal to his buddies! Not manly at all!"

"Well, let's just say his cooperation was not given as willingly as it might seem to you students" Mr. Aizawa promised. "He is currently at the Night-Eye agency undergoing further interrogation"

"What about Eri?" Midoriya asked.

"The good news is that she does not seem to be part of the berserker experiment according to Daiki." Mr. Aizawa continued. "So, she is not being subjected to the same.... conditions that Nanami was"

The word torture was left unsaid in his statement, but my shoulders sag with relief for that bit of news.

"However" Principle Nezu climbed into the chair at the head of the table, but didnt actually sit, he just remained standing on it. "It seems Eri is being held by the Yakuza, so for all we know, that poor girl might still be going through her own nightmare."

Confirming what we all already knew; that we accomplished nothing with this last raid, a somber silence spread across the room.

Disappointment so thick in the air you could taste it.

"So, what's the plan?" It was Kirishima who broke the silence.

"Find Eri" Mr. Aizawa answered "She is our top priority" His eyes focus on Bakugou when he adds "Not Gin"

"We have to end him to get Eri" Bakugou responded through clenched teeth.

"We can't keep letting him show up whenever he wants!" Bakugou raised his voice but his white knuckles told me he was holding back. "First he goes after Nanami's mom and now he nearly killed her just to forcefully induce her transformation so that she would be the one to take us out?! so that she would have our blood on her hands!" He stood up abruptly from the table. "She's-"

A swell of emotion fluttered in my chest.

"Kachan is right" Midoriya interjected before Bakugou kept working himself up. "He will just keep getting in the way of us finding Eri"

"You're not wrong boys" All Might began "We are just going to focus most of our efforts in finding Eri instead of looking for Gin, but that doesnt mean we arent going to prepare for him as well."

"Most of our efforts?" Ochako picked up on the fact that they didnt say all.

"That's right, it's about time that we are the ones to set the pieces on the board" Principle Nezu smiled.
