CHAPTER TEN
eight of heartIN TWO MINUTES, this place would turn into a blood bath.
The rules had been clear, this game would never allow multiple players to walk out of this place alive. This can't be true... there has to be a way for all of us to survive. What if the game's already playing with our heads and is making us believe there can only be one winner?
Kaori, who was usually calm and tempered, was feeling her pulse racing in her chest, she wiped her forehead in anticipation, feeling some sweat on her temples when she hadn't even moved yet.
Slowly, most of the other participants disappeared inside the large maze, some more confident than others. Kaori noticed some of them carried lethal weapons —guns, knives and even a machete, and she made a mental note to avoid them at all costs.
She was pulled out of her trance by Asuka's figure popping in front of her. She had a reassuring smile on her lips but her eyes betrayed her obvious nervousness, "We... we got this, okay? I'm sure there's a way to both get out alive."
Kaori's face contorted in pain, looking away to avoid breaking into tears, "That's not what the rules said," was all she could murmur.
Asuka's facade slightly shattered, quickly shaking it off in denial, "I trust you, I know you can outsmart the rules. Listen, I'm gonna go take a look around to see how big this maze is. You... try to decrypt this whole thing, let's meet up here five minutes before the end, okay?"
Before Kaori could say anything, Asuka had walked away —covering her terrified expression, and Kaori watched her walking past a large series of mirrors, all facing one another through different angles, trying to catch every reflection as she deeply wondered if it was the last time she would ever see her.
The bell rang, "Game start," and Kaori silently walked inside the maze, taking a first turn to the left, soon finding herself overwhelmed by the amount of mirrors surrounding her. Usually, she would not care much about staring at her reflection but, at this specific moment, it was the last thing she wanted to do.
She was scared that trying to find the real mirror —whatever that was supposed to be, would drive her insane as it seemed that, to find it, all you had to do was look at yourself through any mirror.
Kaori was trying to block the ragged breaths she could hear, mostly from participants scared for their lives and wondering how they could win this game, keeping her gaze on the floor.
I don't wanna look up, I'm sure they're playing with us. This game looks like some freaking Narcissus myth type of shit, they're all going to become obsessed with their reflections in the mirrors, thinking the only way to win is to kill everyone and to stare at themselves.
A tiny bell was heard inside her headset, pulling her out of her thoughts, "A player found the real mirror."
Kaori heard a groan not far away and walked faster, scared that this very first announcement would reveal peoples' real nature faster than she had expected.
