CHAPTER THIRTY SEVEN
queen of diamonds
THE RAYS OF THE SUN carried a thick air into the living room. Piercing through the light clouds slowly moving into the sky, the warmth scratched Chishiya's skin and a tiny grunt filled the space as he fluttered his eyelashes. He didn't know exactly when he fell asleep during the night but it took a lot of twisting and turning until he eventually collapsed into slumber.
As his eyes adjusted to the brightness, he recalled parts of his dream. More so memories of Kaori's sounds, her lips on him, the way her fingers had pulled his hair, the feeling of her hot skin against his hand. Memories had invaded his sleep and Chishiya let out an uncontrolled sigh.
The power she had on him was obvious, unmanageable for someone like him, usually so devoid of care and interest in others. She had made him care —too little or too much, his heart was burning and he despised the way it clenched in pain and how it would beat harder just at the thought of her.
It was only the right decision not to play with her any longer.
Because, either he would let her win —dying in the process, or he would have to watch her die and he didn't feel like enduring the consequences.
Eventually, he sat up and his eyes caught something on the living room table. Something that wasn't on it the day before.
The Eight of Hearts card.
Slowly, Chishiya got up and looked into the bathroom to find it empty. He made his way to her bedroom, hesitating for a few seconds before twisting the doorknob and opening the door.
Kaori wasn't inside. The bed was done, almost as if she hadn't slept in it and everything was neat.
Chishiya walked back into the living room and silently tiptoed downstairs, into the bookstore. Why was he somehow expecting her to be standing behind the counter with a cup of coffee and that smile on her face?
Unlike his memories in this place, nobody else was downstairs.
He contemplated the feeling of loneliness for a few minutes, finding that the bookstore had lost all of its appeal without the owner in it and came to terms with the situation.
Kaori was gone.
[...]
The longer she walked, the duller her heart felt. With each step taken into the empty streets, the pain in her chest would slowly dissolve to be replaced with numbness. It had been too heavy to stay near Chishiya and she had shamelessly fled during dawn, when the blonde man was sleeping.
He had confessed he didn't trust her, admitting she would be his downfall and being in his presence would only force her to wonder if dying because of her would be worthless or if he meant the feelings were too much.
