WITH A TINY TWIST, Kaori opened the door leading to her apartment upstairs. She stood still in the frame, seeing her living space in the exact same state than when she had left to meet with her best friend that fateful morning.

In the entrance, a few pairs of shoes alongside her slippers and the coatrack that carried various jackets.

Straight away, the tiny kitchen —which was the perfect size for a person living alone, and to the right, the living room. Against the wall, the couch she would spend hours on, reading, writing, listening to music and daydreaming. Framing the wall around the couch, a big open cabinet Kaori had made by herself to have her own personal library.

Funny since she was selling books downstairs but it had always been a dream of hers to own one.

In the center of the living room, a large carpet with a tiny table. Lazily dropped on it, an empty coffee mug, a book she had started reading and various notebooks. A corduroy deep green beanbag was just near the windows that covered the entire wall, allowing a lot of natural light inside.

A few plants were scattered all over the place, bringing an even cozier atmosphere.

A long sigh escaped Kaori's lips and she mechanically removed her shoes before stepping inside the apartment. She placed her grocery bag on the kitchen counter and turned around to find Chishiya still waiting by the doorframe.

She frowned, "You can come in."

He walked in silently, removing his shoes and taking some time to observe his surroundings. The place was clean and it seemed obvious that Kaori didn't like to leave any mess around but, at the same time, he could tell she wasn't a cleaning freak when he spotted some dishes abandoned in the sink or the coffee mug on the living room table.

"The place isn't huge but that'll do, I guess." Kaori said. "And I only have one bedroom. But the couch is convertible. If that's okay for you."

Chishiya simply hummed that Kaori turned on her heels and disappeared in her bedroom, leaving him on his own in the girl's apartment.

He couldn't hear any noise coming from her room, assuming she needed some time alone, and he eventually sat down on the couch and turned to take a look at the library framing the wall, his eyes landing on a picture displayed on a shelf.

Kaori was carrying a little girl on her back, both of them brightly smiling at the camera. Chishiya noticed some very similar facial features, same eyes and chin, but what struck out the most was the smile.

He recalled the first time he had seen Kaori, how her smile had been so genuine it had actually reached her eyes. He had never seen a smile like that before and here it was again, on this picture, and on both girls' faces.
