"Build connections.""It takes a village to publish a book," implied Ms. Mitos Suson during her talk at Cebu Literary Festival. I agree with her! Publishing a book involves a lot of people before we will see the finished product on bookstore shelves or on hand. This applies also in writing as general. Building bridges between the writer and readers is radical. Not only to readers but also to fellow authors, editors, book cover artists, publishing house administrators and other people related to writing. By their help, we can walk in the path leading to success. This is where the importance of high technology sets in. We use social media to connect to people for better purposes. Through these channels, we are able to promote our works, create friendships and great camaraderie with our comrades.
Establishing connections is essential in the literary field. The book of Proverbs reminds us, "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." Admittedly, we cannot do it alone. We need our fellows. We need their assistance and wisdom to improve. We must break the wall of shame, as well as the so-called inferiority or superiority complex among our fellow writers. If we have more authentic friends, we can acquire more knowledge regarding writing rules, publishing, marketing and other activities involved. However, we should be mindful not to burn the bridge when we arrived at our destination. We should not use people just to get benefits from them. Build connections with integrity.
