Chapter 8

Light then thought if L was in headquarters and was hiding there. He checked his watch and knew it was time to go to work anyways. He walked to his destination and when he made it there, he entered the building and went to the main room. The Task Force haven't shown up yet but will do so in a few minutes. Light was looking around the room and went to the bathroom instead. He looked around the stalls and found two feet there. He knocked the door and it opened, revealing it to be L. "L, what's wrong? Why did you go missing?" Light asked him, tears falling from his eyes.

"Because..." He simply said, tears streaming down his and he hugged him, crying profusely. Light didn't understand what was going on and wanted to know what was up.

"L, please tell me why you're crying." He insisted, holding his hand. L gulped, pulling a box out and opened it. He took a few deep breaths and exhaled afterwards.

"Light Yagami, will you marry me?" L asked, his hand shaking right now as he said those words. Light felt his heart thumping loudly and wasn't sure what to say.

"L, that's nice of you, but we started dating three months ago. It's a little too early for an engagement, don't you think?" He said to the dark haired 20 year old, thinking he shouldn't have done this.

"But I want to marry you! You're my best friend and my lover! I want us to take it to the next step!" L exclaimed, already crying more than ever.

"I just can't. Not now. Maybe when we're older. After all, we are 20 years old." He assured him, placing his hands on his shoulders.

"But we can elope! That way, our family and friends won't know." He kept insisting, trying to change his mind but Light refused to.

"Lawliet, will you stop getting me to change my mind? This ring can be a promise ring and I will be happy to accept it as it is." He sighed, really tired of L begging him, as it felt like someone was taking hostage towards him. L shook his head no and walked away. He started crying again on his way to the main room and Light followed him. That morning, L was still staring at the ring with tears in his eyes. Soichiro went to him and spoke to him privately.

"I take it that Light doesn't want marry you. L, look at me. After you asked me and Sachiko you want to propose to Light, we discussed this and thought there was no way you two can get married. Mostly because you both are young and it's better to live life and settle down after." He explained to the world's greatest detective.

"Then why do I feel like an idiot? I accused Light as Kira all the time and now, I pushed him away and he doesn't want to talk to me anymore. Soichiro, my life is ruined now and I can't even be in the Task Force anymore or be in Japan anymore." He sobbed, crying profusely.

"L, you're not an idiot. Please don't bring yourself down like that. Have some dessert. You'll feel better this way." He said, offering him his cake that was sitting next to him.

"I don't want it. I just want to leave the Task Force and leave Japan now." He sobbed harder, pushing the plate away, crying onto his arms. Soichiro confronted him, stroking his hair.

"It's going to be okay, L. You're going to be okay." He softly said to him as he continued crying. Light was paying attention to his laptop, listening to emo/grunge music and took one earbud out and heard L's cries. He went to him and asked Soichiro to speak to him. "Go ahead, son." He allowed him and Light sat next to L.

"L, I really appreciate you wanting to marry me. It was short and simple, but when I said I don't want to marry you, it's not only because we're young. But because I don't want to fall out of love for you. You're my best friend and my boyfriend. You make my world bright and I want you to be part of it forever and even in the future, when we are more mature." He explained to him.

"Light, I feel so horrible. In fact, I don't think I can live with myself like this. My heart is broken and I feel like I ruined everything between us." He looked at his amber eyes and cried harder.

"You didn't. Someday, we will get married. I promise you that it'll happen." He placed his hands on his shoulders and wiped his eyes afterwards.

"No, it won't..." He shook his head no and cried some more, looking down and started shaking uncontrollably.

"L, I mean it. Please don't cry anymore. Have some cake." He insisted, handing him the fork. L didn't want to eat anything and he sure as hell didn't want to be bullied into it either. He just wanted to be alone right now.

"Stop bullying me into eating!" He screamed, heading out of the main room and went somewhere in headquarters. Light knew he was going to be either in the stairs or the roof. Either one of those two might be it. He decided to leave him alone, feeling like he needs time on his own.

"Jeez, I never heard L this upset ever." Matsuda commented, whistling after. Light didn't respond as he was deeply concerned for L and started feeling really sad now. He went to his desk and continued listening to some more of his music on his iPod. He placed his sunglasses on and started crying.

L made it to the last step of the stairs and cried some more as he sat down. He didn't want to speak to anyone else today as his day was awful. More so than any other day whereas it was bad, but this one was way worse and it made him cry harder. It was now 11 pm and L hasn't eaten anything as he didn't do so all day. The only thing he had was water and that was it. Near and Mello went to him and hugged him, glad he's okay. He went to bed afterwards and slept in his left side, crying in his sleep.

Light didn't say anything to anyone either as he was really hurting as well and wanted to be alone. He was in the deck, sitting outside and listening to sad music. He then stopped crying and checked to see if the promise ring he got for L is still there. He found it his jacket pocket and went inside immediately, going to his and L's room. "L, I have something for you." He told him, turning the lamp on.

"What is it?" He asked, wiping his eyes and woke up. He saw that it was a ring and assumed it was an engagement ring. "So, you do so want to marry me? Light, I knew you'd change your mind!" He smiled, kissing him.

"L, no. I'm not going to marry you right now. This is a promise ring, meaning I will promise to cherish you and love you more and forever." He told him, kissing him some more and L smiled a lot, wiping his eyes from any tears he had left. "Lawliet, this is a pre engagement ring. I love you forever and always. " Light said with pride and joy in his face and L smiled, kissing him passionately and the ring went into his left hand and the two 20 year olds smiled some more, ending up making love with one another.
