July 1988
"I tell you, Will, every day Lauren gets closer to that delivery date, the more I'm convinced I'm not ready to be a dad— I mean I love that kid to death already! I'm just not feeling as prepared as I should be, ya know?"
"It won't be that bad—I wouldn't know since Gail and I aren't doing the kid thing."
The two young men sat in a pizza parlor booth. Ross downing slice after slice—stress eating. Will Olivier hunched over notebooks, scribbling as fast as he could think.
"What're you doing, Will?"
"You wouldn't believe me if I told you, Ross."
"I may not be the genius scientist with the PHD's and doctorates you possess, but I'm kinda very bright for a big city cop."
"Ha." Will scribbled away.
"Let me see." Ross tugged at the notebook. He scanned over the pages. Raised a brow. "Time travel?"
"I'm onto something."
Ross laughed. "You've watched Back to the Future one too many times, buddy."
"It's not impossible, Ross."
That brow.
"I mean, that theory with the DeLorean is unrealistic, but I think I can figure out how to create a portal that can open up to the 'space/time' continuum."
"You're crazy."
"No, I'm not. Look." he sifted through the pages. "If I can generate the right kind of power to break through this present dimension, I can access the flow of time."
"How long have you been working on this theory?"
"Since 1985."
"...The year Back To the Future came out."
Guilty smile.
"Will."
"Okay, but listen! I was just playing around with the idea. I wanted to see if I could find a remotely possible way to access the flow of time. But ... " he looked around, unsure to speak out loud.
"What?"
"Things got real, Ross."
"Okaaay. Real how?"
Will stacked his work. Placed it in his satchel. "Get a box for that."

Will Olivier's place ...
"I didn't know how to show you this." Will handed Ross a photo, showing a note on the backside first. "Read it before you
look at the photo.""'Dear Professor Olivier'," scoff. "Okay."
"Read."
"'Dear Professor Olivier, IT WORKS. I can't tell you anything so as not to screw up what has to happen. But maybe this photo will get you the help you need.'" He flipped the photo. Gasped. Confusion filing in. "That's- that's me and Lauren- and ... "
"Your baby."
Ross looked closely at the photo. The date on the corner. Him sitting on the hospital bed with Lauren, holding their brand new
baby ... "A girl. ""That's a real photo. Too real to be fabricated."
Ross looked at the photo, incredulous. "But Lauren is so sure we're having a boy- I mean, we don't know for sure, the little guy had it's legs crossed in the ultrasound, but Lauren is so sure! I just figured it was her woman's intuition."
"In a few weeks, we'll find out. If it's a girl, then we know that it will have worked."
"Then I'll be on board! I'll help you as much as I can. Whenever I'm off-duty, you'll have my help!"
