"How about, red?" Hanna asked
"Too cliché" I said, rolling my eyes
Skylar giggled. "Nicolette's got a point though. Red is so typical, so ordinary, and Nicolette is no ordinary girl" Liz said.
The four of us were sitting on my bed, looking at dress catalogues for homecoming, even though it's still a few weeks away. Skylar is wearing her neighbor, Holly's old homecoming dress. Holly is a year older than us, she's a senior. Her dress is long and red with a beautiful sequin pattern, and a cut out back. Hanna's dress falls just above her knees, it's a soft yet pretty pink with jewels around the neckline and along the straps. Liz just got her dress yesterday. It's black and fitted perfectly to her body. She bought a beautiful diamond necklace that looks perfect with her dress.
And I, however cannot even pick a color for my dress.
"So reds off the table, then?" Hanna said.
We all laughed.
"What about blue? it's your favorite color"
Liz said
"It is?" Hanna and Skylar said simultaneously.
"Yeah, you didn't know that?" Liz asked. They shook their heads.
"I would wear blue, but my dress was blue last year and besides, Kennedy, Megan, and Macey all got blue dresses"
"So? A bunch of girls have pink dresses but I'm wearing pink" Hanna said
"Yeah but no one else in our homecoming group is wearing pink besides you, I don't want to be wearing the same color as 3 other people in our group"
"Oh true" Hanna nodded.
"Hand me that magazine" I said to Liz
I flipped through the many pages, but still had no luck.
"Alright, I'm giving up" I said, dropping the magazine on the floor
"Giving up on what?" We all turned to see Cam standing in the doorway. He walked over to me and I kissed him.
"So what are you giving up on, exactly?" He asked again.
"Finding Nicolette a homecoming dress" Liz explained.
"So why is it so hard? You look perfect in everything" He said smiling
"Awe" all the girls said. Cam blushed a little.
"She can't chose a color" Hanna said
"Well, how about taking a break? Heading to the beach? Maybe you'll get some ideas there. Josh and Andrew are already there, we can all go"
We all agreed and then headed to the beach.Cam and I were walking alone along the shore, holding hands.
"The water is so pretty" I said
"Not as pretty as you" he said. I smiled at him and he smiled back.
"I can't believe summers almost over"
"You don't want to go back to school?" cam asked.
"No, the opposite. I'm looking forward to it. This has been the best and worst summer ever. And at least at school, I won't have to see Nash"
Cam stopped walking and looked at me.
"What?" I asked confused
"You-You haven't said his name since...you know"
"Oh, right. I think I'm passed it, I've moved on. I mean, I'll defiantly never be able to forget it but I don't want to think about it all the time"
Cam nodded. "are you still seeing that therapist?"
"I had a session the other day but I think I'm done with that, at least for now. I haven't seen a therapist since my mom died and my dad went to jail. It does help in a way but It also reminds me of that"
"Can a I ask you something personal? You don't have to answer it if you don't want to"
"Yeah, okay"
"Di-Did you ever ask your dad, you know why he killed your mom?"
I nodded.
"It was on my moms birthday the year after she died. I was really mad and sad so I asked my Aunt to take me to see my dad.....
---------------------------------------
I ran down the stairs stomping and crying.
"Sweetie, what's wrong?" My aunt asked
"I wanna go see him. Now."
"Alright. Are you sure?"
I nodded. My aunt stood a few feet behind me so she wasn't listening to our conversation. I picked up the phone and stared at my father. He had a slight smile on his face.
"Nicolette, I'm so happy to see you" he said
"It's her birthday, you know" I said angrily
"I- I know sweetie"
"So, why'd you do it? Why did you take her away from me? Why did you take away one of the only people that love me?"
"I I love you"
"No you don't. If u did, you wouldn't have killed my mommy"
"But you said people, who else loves you if I don't?"
"Cameron, Cameron loves me. And aunt Hayley loves me and I love them. So are you gonna answer me?"
He was silent.
"Why'd you kill her?!" I yelled
"Because...."
"You didn't even have a reason, did you? Because there was no reason to kill her! She was perfect and the best mommy in the world. And you took her away"
"Nicolette wai-" I stormed off.
------------------------------------
"I never heard his answer" I said, looking up at Cam.
"Do you still want it? his answer, I mean"
"Of course. Of course I want to know why he killed her. But I can't ask. I won't ask him. He'll lie to me and After that, I couldn't ask him"
Cam nodded.
"I wasn't ever supposed to tell you this. I actually kind of forgot about it"
"What is it?"
"I found a box of your mothers things in my basement, I think there are things that your mom left for my mom or something"
"And?"
"There's a diary in the box. Maybe it'll tell you something"
"Can you get it for me?"
"Yeah, I will"
We changed the subject to homecoming to lighten the mood.
"Did you think of a color yet?"
I shook my head "I still can't decide"
A big wave hit us and got us soaked. we both started laughing, we fell on the sand.
"Ow" I said "I sat on something" I stood up and Cam picked up a beautiful salmony-orangish starfish.
"It's a starfish" he laughed
I smiled and laughed too.
"Orange" he said
"Huh?"
"Your dress. It should be orange."
he stood up and handed me the starfish.
"Keep it."
"Orange" I said "okay"
