The Assurer

As the two separated, the moment of intimacy remained as they stared lovingly into each other's eyes, neither wanting to speak first. Jack was shocked that she had obliged his dare, making him wonder why she would go that far just for the sake of playing a game. Unless... it wasn't just because of the game. Could she actually... feel the same way I do about her? The thought alone made Jack's heart skip a beat, as he continued to stare at her beauty, attempting to read her intriguing expression. Deciding to break the silence himself, Jack nervously asked, "Why did you do the dare?" The girl gulped and sat back into the couch, separating herself from him slightly. It was clear that she was nervous, as she held the blanket around her body closer to herself.

"I'm not entirely sure." The two sat in silence more, and this time they could both tell that it was a rather uncomfortable one. Although Jack was happy he could actually express his feelings, he couldn't help but wonder if he had just ruined the very real friendship they had come to develop. "What is love to you, Jack?" Jack pondered the question, wondering if he should be honest and tell her the explanation his own mother had given him from when he was a young boy. With a bittersweet smile, he decided it would likely be best to be honest.

"My mom told me when I was young that love is when you'd do anything for that person, even if it means sacrificing yourself, just to see them happy and safe." Jack paused, trying to calm his racing heart, before continuing. "Honestly, (Y/n), that's how I feel about you. I would do anything to see you happy and safe." He could see her genuinely holding onto every word he said.

"Why do you love me, though? Why me?"

"You are a real human being. One that cares about others. I admire- no, I love that about you. I love that you care, I love that you're nice, I love that you're genuine. I love you as a person. And it's okay if you don't love me. I will keep loving you and I will never stop." (Y/n), feeling speechless and a sense of warmness throughout her body, found herself crying over the sentiments Jack had just expressed. I can't believe he... loves me. Although he hadn't asked, she could tell he was waiting for her to definitively express whether she felt the same or not. Did she? She was grateful for him keeping her safe and going out of his way to be with her and protect her, but was that really love? She had grown to like Jack without a doubt. Between his humor, his kindness towards her and his genuine interest in her life, (Y/n) could confidently say she considered Jack a real friend, despite the odd way they met and the circumstances surrounding them. But... love?

As she observed him looking at her with such eagerness yet patience, awaiting her response, she began to contemplate love and what it entails. Before she could finish, they both whipped their heads to the front door where they heard footsteps approaching. Jack and (Y/n) both looked at each other before swiftly jumping off the couch with their belongings and running up the stairs. Successfully making it out of the building before the construction workers entered, they both hopped down the fire escape stairs in a hurry, before opening the car doors and driving off. Breathing heavily from the adrenaline they were both feeling, they both let out humorous laughs while looking at each other.

"That was so fucking close."

(Y/n) smirked, looking out the window and observing the scenery before her. "Yeah... it was." Jack looked over at the girl due to her odd response, looking back at the road before realizing that she hadn't been talking about the construction workers entering.

Author's Note: I'm back!! My hiatus definitely gave me the room I needed to focus on my studies and also write more chapters of both my stories, all without the pressure of having to upload. :) I have 13 pre-written chapters of this story, and about 10 of my Jeff the Killer story. I know this chapter was short and so is the next, but those two are the last two short chapters before they get very long!
