*10 hours until the attack*

Ben stared at his computer monitors for what seemed like the umpteenth time, finding himself unable to focus whatsoever at the work he had before him. He had chewed his fingernails until they bled, with almost no skin left surrounding the area. It was the day of the attack; Ben knew of this because Jack had texted him the information. As Ben pulled out his phone to read the text once again, the words entering his mind had now lost all meaning. “You’re my best friend, so I need to tell you this. The Reapers of Justice are coming to the mansion tomorrow at 10:30 PM. Please don’t tell many about this, only you, Masky, and a few others.” Throwing the phone back on the desk in front of him, Ben deeply sighed out as he began to think through his options. He had yet to confide in anyone this information that Jack had provided, and Ben also had many questions as to why he would even know or tell him. The only scenario in which Ben could think was that perhaps he had recovered his memories with the human and they have chosen to make a deal with the Reapers of Justice. Even so, Ben felt intense guilt at the fact that, despite being Jack’s best friend, he could not and did not tell him the truth of him losing his memories. When the shoe was on the other foot and Jack had an opportunity to tell Ben the truth, though, he did not hesitate.

A knock on the door interrupted Ben’s thoughts, causing his head to turn towards the source. Hoodie walked in and leaned against the door frame. “Are you finished with that USB yet?” Ben gulped nervously and shook his head. Ben was not the best of liars, and he had blatantly obvious tells when he was nervous. Therefore, these past few days have been absolute hell in terms of missing deadlines and not being able to focus, as this was not like Ben whatsoever. Hoodie narrowed his eyes at Ben as he noticed that, once again, he was daydreaming. Hoodie’s heavy footsteps coming his way broke Ben’s spell as he managed to, once again, focus on the conversation at hand. Hoodie leaned down to match Ben’s height within his computer chair, prompting Ben to break out in a cold sweat. “Something the matter, Ben? You’ve been acting rather peculiar these days.”

Ben began to stutter his answer. “N-not at all. I guess I’ve just been extra tired recently, haha.”

Hoodie hummed in response. “But you never used to need much sleep.”

Ben’s eyes diverted from Hoodie’s suspicious gaze as he moved his cell phone off of his keyboard and began to complete work once again. “I’m not sure, it’s just been one of those days.” Hoodie eyed Ben’s phone suspiciously before silently making his exit. Going up the stairs to Toby’s room, Hoodie knocked on the door calmly before Toby answered.

“What is it?”

Hoodie invited himself into Toby’s room without permission, pushing past him before nodding towards the door, silently asking Toby to shut it. “We need to look through Ben’s phone. I think he’s been hiding something.”

Toby wordlessly nodded before making his way down the stairs and back to Ben’s room. Though this would be risky, this was the only way to keep him away for some time until they were finished searching through his phone. Knocking on the door before entering, Toby interrupted Ben’s thoughts yet again before making his move. “H-h-he would like to speak w-with you.” Ben furred his eyebrows in confusion before getting up from his chair, leaving his phone right on the desk. As he made his way out of his computer room, Toby made sure he was completely out of sight before snatching the phone and making his way back to his room, where Hoodie was still patiently waiting.

As Ben made his way to the third floor, he gulped nervously. Why would he want to see me, other than if he knew something about that text? Feeling for his pockets, Ben’s eyes widened as he realized he had forgotten his phone. Gazing at the door ahead of him, he realized it was far too late to turn back and forced himself to walk forward with trembling legs. Knocking on the door with as much strength as he could muster, he finally received whispers permitting him to enter. Slowly walking into the room while gazing at the floor before shutting the door, Ben approached the front of Slenderman’s desk before bowing respectfully. Whispers entered his mind once again. “To what do I owe this pleasure, Ben?”

Ben confusedly stuttered, unsure of what to say. “W-what do you mean, sir? Didn’t you call me up here?”

“I did not.” Ben’s eyes widened as he realized this was likely a ruse to get him away from his phone. Beads of sweat dropped to the wooden floor. “Why do you seem so nervous, Ben?”
Ben gulped as he brought both hands up to his head, shaking it incessantly as he processed the situation at hand. Another knock on the door made Ben drop to the floor, finding his legs had given out due to his anxiety taking over him. Once Slenderman had permitted the culprit to enter, Ben made eye contact with Hoodie and Toby, knowing that the jig was up and that he would need to begin telling the truth.

*8 hours until the attack*

“So that’s all. I think we have everything.” (Y/n) and Jack eyed the resources gathered that were sitting in their vehicle, ready to be transported to the boat at a moment’s notice. Breathing out a sigh of relief, (Y/n) shut the car door before leaning against the vehicle, feeling a sense of accomplishment and excitement at how close they were to leaving everything behind. As Jack began to silently walk back to their motel room without another word, (Y/n) grabbed his sleeve. “Where are you going?”

As Jack gazed down at the girl, he couldn’t help but look away, snatching his arm back to himself. “I’m just going to watch TV.”

Unexpectedly, (Y/n) followed him into their room and shut the door behind her. “Jack, is something wrong? You’ve been acting strange ever since I came back from the Reapers. You can talk to me about anything.”

Jack wordlessly sat on the edge of the bed and turned the TV on. “There’s nothing to talk about.”

(Y/n) speechlessly stood standing near the door, unsure of what to say or do next, before finally electing to lay on the bed next to Jack. Jack’s eyes widened slightly as (Y/n)’s head laid in his lap, with her holding his leg and looking up at him lovingly. “Jack, are you mad at me?”

Looking at her pouting face, Jack couldn’t help but sigh as he shut the TV off and began to stroke (Y/n)’s hair gently. “I’m going to be honest; this has been kind of hard for me. You know, leaving everything behind isn’t always an easy thing. I had friends there, even though it was not that many. I guess… since that mansion was everything I’ve ever known in this life, it’s very bittersweet. It’s hard for me to walk away like nothing ever happened.”

(Y/n) closed her eyes as she processed this information, Jack continuing to stroke her hair. “I understand completely. It’s going to take some time to get used to, just like it took me to get used to staying in the mansion.”

Jack looked up at the ceiling. I guess I never thought about that. This whole time, I’ve been thinking to myself that she clearly doesn’t understand what I’m going through, but how selfish is that when she definitely went through the same thing because of me? Jack leaned down and kissed her cheek tenderly. “Thank you for understanding. Please forgive me if I’ve been really short lately, I guess I was just in my head about that and… to be honest, I thought you wouldn’t understand that.”

(Y/n) kissed Jack’s clothed thigh while his hand moved from her hair to her back, lightly massaging. “You don’t have to be sorry, I’m just glad you were honest with me. I love you and we will make this work; I promise you.” Jack looked back to how it used to be when they had first met, how much he had resented human beings and how little he believed in their ability to be honest and caring. For someone who used to hate promises, Jack now found himself loving them, as he knew (Y/n) always meant every single one. He loved her beyond words, and he knew deep in his heart that they truly would make everything work out, no matter how hard it would be. Jack’s hand continued to scratch her back as his guilt slowly crept back into his mind. I didn’t tell her about me confiding in Ben about the plan. Looking down at the woman lying in his lap, her eyelashes fluttered as her eyes remained closed. Even though Jack knew in his heart that he should tell her the total truth, he couldn’t find himself to ruin this perfect moment of serenity. Everything will be okay.
