Featherpaw sat silently beside Fawnstar. "He'll be back in a few moments," Lilyheart said. "He's only losing one life. . ." But she looked worried. How many lives does he have left? She wondered, dreading the answer. "What is going on? Is the. . . Is the fox back?" Featherpaw jumped, startled. Fawnstar was staring at her. "Well, is it gone?" Featherpaw nodded slowly. "Few!" Lilyheart gasped. "Let's go back to camp, so you can have Lizardstripe look at you."
"Wait," Fawnstar mewed. "I need to tell you something first."
"Okay." Lilyheart meowed, frowning. "Well," Fawnstar said, "The truth is. . . I don't have many lives left, only three."
Lilyheart looked confused. "How did you lose your fourth?"
"I. . . You know how I said that Clawstar died? He didn't. He left to be a loner. He said clan life was to hard, and so he left. Since he kept one of his lives, starclan gave me only 8."
Featherpaw gasped, surprised that he would share such a dark secret. That's not right! She thought. He'd never tell a lie! She slapped her tail over her mouth as she realized that she had said it aloud, and looked away, embarrassed. "No, it's fine." Fawnstar said quietly. "I shouldn't have kept it secret. But promise not to tell anyone this, okay?"
"Of course." Lilyheart and Featherpaw said in a union. "Good," Fawnstar said. "Let's head back to camp. . . I have a lot to tell the clan.''
