Lukas POV*
I woke up early again. I still can't get used to how things are now. From sleeping alone in an old house, or the church. To live with Isaac. Let alone sleep in the same bed.
I carefully got up, making sure not to wake him. It was still dark out, but I was awake.
I made my way downstairs, not expecting anyone to be there, but to my surprise, Nigel was already busy in the store. I made my way to the shop front to see what he was doing.
"You're up early." He commented as I walked in, I didn't even realize he noticed me.
"I- yeah-" Was all I could say as I looked around the shop. The plaza was covered in pink decorations, primarily hearts and other love-related things.
"What are you doing?" I asked. He looked at me and then at the decorations. "Just decorating for Valentine's Day." He smiled as he came down from his ladder. "For what?" I asked, not sure what that was.
He looked at me surprised. "You don't know about Valentine's Day?" I shook my head. I guess I missed more than I thought, being alone in that house for so long.
"Well, how do I explain this-" he started, as he moved to the other side of the store. "It's just a day, mostly for couples, where you sort of celebrate love, I guess." He said, struggling to find a good way to explain.
"Celebrate?" I added, He got back on the ladder and continued putting things along the shelves. "Yeah, you spend time together, or get them something nice- Have you never heard of it?" He asked.
"No- not really, it does sound fun," I said back. "It is, Ayleen and I did it all the time-" He added. I wanted to ask more but knew it was a sensitive subject so I just decided to let it be.
"Anyway-" He got back down, finished with his decorating, and made his way over to the counter. "Now that you're up anyway, do you mind getting some things from me from tow, while I get ready back here?" He asked,
I shrugged. "Sure- why not." I smiled as I walked up to him. He reached behind the counter and pulled out a notebook. "There are just a few things, so it won't take that long." He said as he wrote a small list, He tore out the paper and handed it to me.
I wasn't that much, I could probably be back in an hour. So I decided to go right away. "Thanks," He smiled as I left the shop.
I made my way to first place. Looking around it was pretty clear this town celebrated this 'Valentine's lot more than I thought. Not only Nigles, but a bunch of other people decorated their shops.
I entered the first place on the list and again, was surprised to see so much decor. The owner looked over from the counter to me, a bit confused. "You're here early?" She smiled as she stood up. I made my way to the front, nodding. "Nigel needed a few things." She looked at my list and disappeared into the back.
I'm still not used to this. On the one hand, I was great Aubrey and I were treated so normally, but it does make me wonder if it was even necessary for me to hide that long.
"Here you go-" she smiled as she handed me a bag. She grabbed the list from me and crossed out the few things she got for me. "Thank you-" I gave her the money I owned and left to go to my next stop.
By now the sun was slowly starting to rise, as the streets got lighter with every step I made. The streets were also getting more and more crowded. Mostly just the usual people and their morning walk, but also a great number of couples were walking around.
It was pretty nice to see, And seeing them exchange so many gifts made me kind of want to do something too, though in not sure what I can do.
I walked into the next store, which was about more crowded than the last one, people in this town get up early, I guess.
I waited in line, looking around at the decorations that were also in this shop. I noticed a basket at the counter, filled with roses.
Eventually, it was my turn, and once again I showed her the list and got what I was looking for, I was surprised when she had everything I needed, completing the list. that was sooner than I thought. As I gave her the money I couldn't help but look at the basket again. "You want one?" The woman behind the counter asked. I looked up at her confused. "For Valentine's Day, to give to your girlfriend?" She explained. "I- sure?" I smiled. She handed me one of the roses and gave me the bag. I smiled at her and made my way back to the shop.
I looked at the rose, still confused about what it should do with it. I felt kind of stupid for not knowing. But I do have a pretty good excuse, I think.
by the time I got back, the sun was up, and the streets looked a lot warmer. I headed back inside, only to find Nigel at the counter, getting some orders ready, when the bell caught his attention. instinctively I hid the rose behind my back.
"Ah- that fast." He smiled as I made my way to the counter. I handed him the bag. "Again, thanks for getting them this early." He smiled as he took it from me.
"It's fine, besides. You probably would've asked me to do it anyway." I chuckled. "Fair point." He said back. I turned and made my way to the back. I didn't get breakfast yet.
When I got to the back I found Isaac awake as well, already making breakfast for himself. "Oh, there you are.' He smiled as he noticed me. 'Hey." I smiled back, making my way over to him.
"Are you kidding me, You've only lived here for a week and you're already getting roses," he smirked.
I looked at the rose and back at him. He noticed and connected the dots. "You don't know what Valentine's Day is, do you?" He asked, stopping what he was doing for a second.
"I- kind of, but not really, no," I admitted. "Well, it's not that difficult." He smiled. "When someone gives you a rose, It usually means they like you, or more-" He explained. "I'm kind of impressed you got one this quick." He laughed.
"Ah- that makes sense," I said to myself. he looked up confused. I handed the rose to him. he grabbed it reluctantly. "Well- I was told to give it to my girlfriend, and well, I guess that would be you?" I smiled.
He looked at me confused, but it soon turned into a smile. "Did I do it right?" I asked, He started to laugh before nodding. "Yeah, sure- good enough." He joked.
