Marc POV*
"So what do you think of this?" She asked as she stood in front of another empty house. "You know, no matter how many times you ask, you're still gonna get the same answer. I don't really care." I said for the fifth time this morning.
After we left the church, Aubrey was determined on finding a new place to stay. Despite not having money or a job. But she couldn't shut up about it.
"Oh come on, you can at least pretend to be interested in what it looks like. You do realize we're going to live there." She complained as she walked up to me.
"You're still just looking, it's not like you can actually afford any of them." I shot back. She crossed her arms. "Why can't you just let me have fun." She turned around and started walking away. I went after her, not sure why.
"Then let's do it your way." She said as she noticed me walking after her. "I'll try and find a job first. I guess we'll just have to stay at the church a little longer..." She sighed.
And so we walked through the whole town a second time, only this time looking out for the 'Help Wanted' signs instead of the 'For Sale' signs. Weirdly enough, the difference wasn't that much.
It didn't take long for Aubrey to find a place she thought would be interesting to work at. So after hyping herself up she went inside. I waited outside for her.
Maybe it would be a good idea for me to do the same, but a bakery didn't really seem like a place I'd like to work at.
I took a seat on a bench nearby and waited for her to come back.
The town looked pretty much the same form before I left. And I even recognized some of the people, although vaguely. But none of them seemed to recognize me, which was a relief. But it weirdly hurt as well.
I want close with anyone but Nigel and Ayleen. I didn't really care for anyone else BUt thinking back it might've helped to have more friends.
I let out a sigh, looking up at the sky. The sun was already beginning to set. People were slowly leaving the streets and going inside. I wasn't sure what time it was, but by the smell coming from the houses, it was close to dinner time.
A few minutes later, Aubrey came back from inside the bakery. I sat up, watching as she thanked whoever she was just talking with.
She walked up to me, her smile growing bigger with each step. "how did it go?" I asked, standing up. "Great, they asked me to come back tomorrow. That's a good sign right?" She looked up at me excitedly.
I dropped the whole 'pretending not to care' act and answered honestly. "It is, congrats." I smiled. she looked up at me, practically glowing from excitement.
"So can we look for a house now?" She quickly went back. I couldn't help but laugh. "Right, sure, but slow down. You're not hired yet." I smiled, walking away, planning on going back to the church. After being out and about, I was starving.
She followed me pretty quickly. Trying her best not to show her excitement too much, as she was an adult, and we were in public. But from the look on her face, it wasn't that easy.
"Did you want to go back to the church already?" She asked suddenly. "Yeah, that's where the food is," I said back.
"We don't have to go back to the church to find food." She said as she stopped walking. "What do you mean?" I asked confused.
"If I remember correctly, Isaac's house is nearby. Maybe we could stay with them?" She offered.
I wasn't sure how to respond. I really wanted something to eat, and whatever Nigel was making would definitely be better than anything we had stored at the church, given most of it was canned food.
But it felt rude to just barge in and expect him to have food for us. And it still felt awkward being in the same room with him after everything that happened.
"Marc? You still with me?" Aubrey asked, pulling me out of my thoughts. "I- Sorry what?"
"Are you coming with me?" She asked as she pointed in the direction of their house. "I'm not sure that's a good idea..."
"Why not?" She asked. "Well, we weren't invited, first of all." I sighed. "Well, we can always ask, if he says no we can go the back." She said, already walking towards their house. I let out a sigh as I followed her.
Her plan seemed okay, aside from the fact that I know he won't say no. Not to me at least. After disappearing for so long he tries everything to keep me close, because of all the questions he must have.
I held my breath as she knocked on the door of the shop. A part of me was hoping they just wouldn't hear the knock from all the way over here. But of course, someone did, at least one of the people had super hearing.
I looked down as soon as I saw Nigel walk in the front, looking at us confused. "What are you two doing here?" He asked as she opened the door.
"Hello, Mr. Bowman." Aubrey started. "I know it's last minute but we were wondering if you had room for two more tonight?" She asked. "Dinner, I mean." She added quickly.
He looked between us doubtfully. I was still focused on the ground in front of me, feeling incredibly embarrassed.
"Well-" He started.
"It's fine if you don't, we'll just go back to the-" I tried, grabbing Aubrey by the sleeve and pulling her away from the door, But Nigel stopped us.
"I never said that." He smiled. I let go of Aubrey and turned back to him.
"It's not much, but I'm sure we can share." He offers, making room for Aubrey to go inside. She smiled, thanking him, and headed inside.
I looked up at him, feeling even more embarrassed than I should. He stared at me confused as he waited for me to go in as well. "Are you coming?" He smiled. I let out a sigh and nodded, before heading in after Aubrey.
