"Sugar..." Jeremiah's voice was a velvet growl, low and possessive, as his fingers trailed lazily up Evelyn's bare side. Her skin was warm and soft beneath his touch, the faint scent of last night still lingering between them, a mix of sweat, leather, and the salt of his skin. She lay on her side, tangled in white sheets, her arm clutching the blanket as if it were her last line of defense. Her lashes fluttered like they were waking up slower than the rest of her.
"Yes?" Her lips curved into a slow, sleepy smile, the kind that could bring a man to his knees. Jeremiah's chest tightened at the sight of her. His hand stilled at her jaw, tangling gently into the strands of her messy brown hair, haloed around her head like some sort of wild, untamed crown. To him, she looked like sin and salvation.
"If you want to say hi to the twins before we meet with Ash, we need to get up now." His tone was teasing, but the fire in her eyes lit at the mention of them. The twins had been born just a week after she'd woken up, and Evelyn had practically claimed them as her own from that first day. Emma had been over the moon naming Evelyn as their godmother, and Ev had taken to the role with a dedication that made Jeremiah just a little envious.
"Oh, yes!" she gasped, suddenly awake as she swung those endlessly tempting legs over the side of the bed. Jeremiah couldn't help but roll his eyes at how quickly she'd abandoned him for the babies. He sat up behind her, sliding an arm around her shoulders and dragging her back to him with a wicked smile. His lips found her shoulder, tracing the curve of her collarbone with slow kisses, and when he let out a low, rumbling growl against her skin, she shivered and leaned back into him like she'd been waiting for this all morning.
"But we could spare a few minutes for a cuddle," he murmured against her ear, the heat of his breath sending goosebumps racing across her skin. His bare chest pressed to her back, hard muscle against soft curves, making her toes curl where they touched the cool floor.
"Oh, Jeremiah..." She breathed out his name, part protest, part prayer, as her head fell back against him.
"We don't have time for this," she whispered, her voice soft, conspiratorial, like someone might catch them even though the two of them were alone. Jeremiah's chuckle vibrated against her spine as he eased her back down onto the bed, pinning her there with his weight.
"We can always make time," he said with a grin before kissing his way down her stomach, slow enough to make her bite her lip. His mouth had just found the place that made her forget her own name when... A knock shattered the moment.
"The twins are calling you!" a voice shouted from the other side of the door. Evelyn laughed, her body still tingling, and cupped Jeremiah's face between her palms. His groan was almost a growl as he dropped his chin onto her stomach like a sulking boy denied his favorite toy.
"Sometimes it feels like they're ours," he grumbled, reluctantly rolling to the side. Evelyn's smirk was pure mischief as she stood and bent to gather the clothes scattered across the floor from the night before. Jeremiah lay back against the mattress, hands behind his head, and let a image creep into his mind- Evelyn with a swollen belly, her green eyes glowing as she tried to herd two or three kids running circles around her. The thought didn't scare him the way it once might have. If anything, it planted a strange warmth in his chest, heavy and alive.
