"So, if I understood this right... Athena comes from Sweden, got kidnapped by you to help train the sirens, and somewhere along the way fell in love with Gunner?" Evelyn asked, her voice softer now, as though speaking too loud might shatter the strange magic of the story. She pulled in a deep breath and let it out slowly, fogging up the glass of the train window. The silver train rattled on its tracks, weaving through the endless green of the Alaskan forest, the sky above painted in shades of violet and rose as dusk crept closer. They had barely caught their plane here, rushing straight from the motorcycle club. The train had been the quickest way to reach the small cabin Jax had prepared for them, a quiet place to finally breathe after everything.
"But then she chose to slip away in secret when she thought she'd kept all of you safe... safe from the people she believed murdered her family- only to be taken again by those same monsters? Until you and her family saved her?" Evelyn's green eyes searched Jeremiah's face, as though looking for cracks in the truth. The story sounded like something ripped from a fever dream. Jeremiah's lips twitched, almost forming a laugh, but he swallowed it. There was nothing funny about it.
"Yeah," he said simply, nodding. Evelyn let out a low sound, half sigh and half disbelief.
"What a wild love story," she murmured. Her chest ached with something she couldn't quite name. Six months ago, she would have laughed in someone's face if they told her she'd be here, with him, of all people. The old train groaned and shuddered, snapping her out of her thoughts. Evelyn's fingers curled against the bench as she turned to look at her biker. God, she was lucky. After everything, the blood, the fear, the nights spent staring at ceilings with ghosts clawing at her mind, he was still here. Still hers. Jeremiah's rough, warm hand found her knee as if he could feel the shadow that had crept into her thoughts. His thumb moved in slow, steady strokes over her jeans, grounding her.
"It's a crazy story," he said, his voice low, steady.
"but I've never seen two people more in love." His dark eyes found hers, holding them until she felt heat spread through her body like a slow-burning fire. Evelyn leaned back, closing her eyes for a moment as if to make room for everything she'd just heard.
"Our story isn't any less insane," he said against her skin. Her cheeks warmed until they felt feverish, memories of their own wild past rising unbidden. Jeremiah caught the shift in her face and laughed quietly, that deep, familiar sound that always seemed to melt something inside her. He slid from his spot across from her to sit beside her, his thigh pressing against hers.
"Looks like it's only going to get crazier," she said, her voice softer now. She leaned into him, breathing him in, leather, smoke, and the faint scent of the outdoors clinging to his jacket. For a long moment they stayed like that, just holding on to each other, letting the rhythm of the train rock them into something that almost felt like peace.
