Kathryn Elizabeth Darcy wasn't always a monster. She wants to get this point across before any other. She was once a little girl smiling with big cheeks and a missing tooth. Well, she guesses, because she has no recollection of it. Her memories are hazy. Most of her life is.
However, she could tell you exactly what happened the year she turned twelve. In the whole, horrid, gut-wrenching details. Its true glory. Maybe she's even more messed up than she thinks, if she's able to remember it so vividly. A kind of morbid fascination.
But like she said, she wasn't always like that. Her life should've been a goddamn fairytale, if any of it had gone to plan. She was born on an island that, if you squint your eyes and plug your ears, could almost be paradise. She's rich. And if that wasn't enough, her mother's maiden name was Bennet. Bennet and Darcy – really, everything was in the cards for her.
And then her father died. Well, technically, he was lost at sea. But it's been 5 years now, so he's not exactly 'lost' anymore, is he? All in all, not ideal. Edward James Darcy had been some kind of an institution around Figure Eight. Hell, even on the Cut. He was the head of Darcy Housing, which was better than the way it sounded. He let houses go way cheaper than they should've been on the Cut, made sure to keep the rent affordable for anyone who struggled. He was a good man, she thinks. Everything she wished she could've been.
But Kathryn had always been a little too much like her mother. Brown skin, dark almond eyes, dark curly hair. High cheekbones, a pointed chin and plump lips. All sharp. Cold. Calculated. Kind of an asshole.
Angry. There was fire in her soul. Whether it was burning, simmering, or boiling, it was always there. Sometimes she thinks it warms her. Sometimes, she lets it consume her.
Edward's death made it worse. Something went with him, an innocence she never got back. And then, of course, to snuff out the light, her mother realized that she was a little rich girl. Single. She decided to take a page out of Pride and Prejudice.
'It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single girl in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a boyfriend.' She remixed it a bit, true. Made sure that it fit the situation, and who cares if Kathryn wasn't like this? She was barely a teen and Caroline was already talking about marrying her off to the richest kid in Outer Banks.
