So now that the situation was catastrophically bad, it was time to make it ever worse. And by that, Kathryn obviously means going to get the Phantom keys from Luke Maybank.
She hasn't seen him, not since she left at least. She remembers that he gave JJ his eyes and the colour of his hair, but that's about it. And that may only be because she likes both of those things on JJ. But she hates them on him, that's for sure.
He had been emotionally abusive already. She had recognised the signs in JJ because she knew where to look, with her mother. The quietness or being too loud to make sure people heard him, she knew this duality.
And then of course, she came back, and she saw the bruises. Something sharp digs at her heart.
She hates the idea that he has to go back in there.
"Home sweet home," JJ says sourly, pursing his lips as Kie parks the car in front of his house.
Kathryn turns sharply to him. "I'll come," she says, unbuckling her seatbelt.
He takes off his cap and ruffles his hair, nervously tugging at them. "Nah," he sighs out. "This will only take a second."
She considers him, watching as he opens the door with the urge to yank him back and go get the key herself. She sits back in her seat as he walks to the door, opening her window.
"You're back in two minutes or I'm getting in there and dragging you out," she calls out after him.
He turns around with a miserable reassuring smile. The one Kathryn flashes back is equally as bad, but at this point, the three of them know that this is hopeless.
He closes the door behind him. Kathryn exhales. She already wants to get inside and drag him out by his shirt.
"I don't like this," she tells Kie.
"Neither do I," she agrees. "But I think he has to do this alone."
"Does he?"
Kathryn has that look on her face, the same one JJ did when they were waiting for her to get the rope from her father's office. The same kind of worry and the urge to use their bodies as literal shields or something. Kie had that kind of urge when she was trying to get Sarah out of her room – Ward had locked her in. She would've done anything to get her out.
