It had grazed JJ's mind that KD had some sort of secret magic superpowers to make the whole world revolve around her. This was more than 'main character syndrome', it just actually seemed to turn around her. Of course, it's not that he minds...

But he thinks, sometimes, it puts her at risk. And not in a 'I'll protect her' way, because she'd punch him in the face, but more in a 'people are going to shoot at her again, aren't they?' way. Because this, all of this, had Darcy and Routledge written all over it. She was at the centre of the treasure hunt as much as John B was, and what he's trying to say is that she hasn't shown up since last night, and he's freaking out.

And for some reason, it's better to think that she's out there doing her own thing like saving the gold, then thinking that she's running because he told her he liked her and she can't face him again.

It didn't matter because he was still there, sitting on the table on John B's dock, watching him fiddle with his cast, lying on the wooden floor. Kie's there too, behind him, sighing every so often because this is bad.

This is bad, because after everything that happened, what they've just learned, Ward killing Big John and almost killing John B, maybe even Darcy, he still got away with the gold.

He somehow knew to go to the Crain House to get it, and exhumed it. Turns out, he had the rights to the property, and put two and two together when a break in was reported. Son of a bitch.

"You sure he got everything?" Kie asks.

"Every bar," John B answers tiredly. "The whole enchilada." He grunts as he takes his cast off, and throws it far from him. "Look, it's not like I expected a happy ending or some shit."

Kie sighs, gesturing to the cast. "John B–"

"What, Kie? It's a hairline fracture. Who cares?"

"You should care," she tells him. "Your arm's gonna be messed up for life."

"And KD's gonna kill you," JJ adds. "And us for letting you fuck your arm up, put it back."

"Yeah, well," he lets out. "She's not here right now. She needs some time alone before we break the news to her."
