Kathryn doesn't know what to do. She doesn't know how to act, she follows the Pogues around like a lost puppy, while knowing full well that she should be going to Henry. She should be going back home to the Palace and telling him what happened.
But then again, could she face that kind of repercussion? She loves Henry, and some messed up part of her thinks that he must hate her today. Is that even true? Does he hate her? She's so convinced of it she doesn't even bother asking the question out loud.
What if he doesn't know? Or worse, what if he already does know and he's alone at the hospital, waiting for his boyfriend to wake up or die, and she's there, in Kie's parents' car, waiting for time to go by and give her the answer on what to do.
Can anything be even done? She's stuck in an endless loop of waiting again. The other shoe is going to drop, she can feel it coming. As if Max being shot wasn't enough, something else is coming, it has to. She learned it today; you can always go lower.
She stopped crying a few hours ago. She didn't have more tears to shed, she bled herself dry. The pain is still there, though. Lodged against her ribs, digging inside her heart. It hurts everytime Kathryn breathes, grazing it, inducing a sharp pain.
Kie sends her shy smiles, Pope glances at her almost in fear, as if he was waiting for her to explode.
John B, Max's blood still staining his hands, tries to make himself as scarce as possible. He doesn't want Kathryn to see it. He doesn't want her to see him. He knows how she must be feeling; a glance at him is a reminder that Max was in a pool of his own blood, and she wasn't there.
She knows he feels somewhat guilty too. But she's the one who left, again. She's the one who listened to him and went to the Pogues. Max was shot, and she wasn't even there.
She feels JJ tug at her hand. He doesn't know what to say. He never knew how to speak most of the time, never knew the right thing to say, but this was worse. So, he doesn't say anything, and just holds her in any way he can. Touch her to remind her that she's not alone. He always manages to have one part of his body touching Kathryn's. Right now, in the backseats, his leg is pressed flush against her own, and he keeps looking at her. Kathryn looks stubbornly in front of her.
