Kathryn stares at the journal. Long enough to know its flaws by heart, the way the leather bends and feels against her fingers. It was hidden, but what for? For who to find? Maybe her father wanted her to get inside the room way earlier than she did. Maybe even beyond the grave, she still disappointed him.

She wants to rip her eyeballs from her skull.

"Where's John B anyway?" she asks, leaning back into her chair. "He said he'd be here by now."

There was a mandatory meeting at the Château. Kathryn had to get away from Henry and Max – they've become a bit clingy, after Rafe and everything. At the very least, they're on edge. But then again, she's going out with the Pogues, it's not like they won't look out for her.

And as far as Kathryn is concerned, she'd much rather not have anyone look at her with concern right now. She hasn't told them about any of it, whether it's the Merchant or the journal, and she doesn't want to.

Except, apparently, everyone wants her to. "Have you opened it?" Pope asks her, ignoring her comment about John B's tardiness.

"No," she says, a bit too sharply. "I won't. It's not like the compass, it's..." She sighs. "JB's dad has been missing for nine months, my dad has been dead for five years."

Kie hums. "You don't want to know what it's about then."

For some reason, it ticks her off. She feels judged. Or just seen, she doesn't know the difference, but it feels a lot like showing up naked to school in a dream. "No, Kie, I don't want to find out. Has your dad been dead for half a decade?" She doesn't answer. "Yeah, that's what I thought."

Kie frowns at her, irritated. "You're doing too much, Kat."

"Yeah, that's because you're pissing me off!" Okay. She may be doing too much. But Rafe, her mother, those are very different things compared to her dad. She never opened up about him for all this time. She's not going to start now.

"She's worried about you, dumbass," JJ chimes in. "We all are – you're acting so weird. Staring at the journal like it's a dead rat."

Kathryn huffs. "Wow JJ, you're making great analogies today."
