Kathryn lets herself forget everything bad that happened over the past week or so. They found the Royal Merchant. JJ and her made up. She doesn't see how everything can turn sour again.

Well, yeah, they didn't find five hundred million in gold. That should weigh her down. And it does. But she thinks she's still riding on the high of most of the Pogues knowing about her and not looking at her differently. She obviously was terrified at the idea of them reacting badly – but she was also scared of them doing too much. She didn't want them to change around her. Or look at her differently, and they didn't.

She doesn't think about the fact that JJ is going to be asking questions soon. She thinks that he has to know now. She has to tell him at some point. For him, and for her too. Because she needs her best friend back.

It's easier to believe that she's doing it for him, though. There's something that feels wrong about doing things for herself. Unnatural – like she shouldn't. She doesn't deserve it. So, making herself believe that this is for JJ is easier.

It's not going to happen anytime soon, but at least now she considers the idea. Clearly, this is going to be a good day.

If it wasn't for Max's slumped shoulders and ducked head when he walks into the kitchen. Max is always, always happy. And soft. Always standing straight, chin up. Smiling the kind of smiles that makes his eyes crinkle. But not right now.

So something is very wrong.

"Max?" she calls out, smiling to try and cheer him up. "You okay?"

He's in his uniform, so he's still on the job. He never comes home wearing it, he knows that both Kathryn and Henry hate that. To be fair, he hates it too. It worries her right now.

"Hey Kat, I uh..." He runs a hand on his face, clearly bothered by something. "I heard something at the police station and wanted to come and warn you, you know?"

Her smile falters. She immediately thinks of JJ and the gun, her heart in her throat. Or even the drone they just stole. Kie's parents put out missing child posters, maybe? Oh my god, Pope has his scholarship...
