CHAPTER 17

CROSS smiled proudly while staring at the porridge he just made. It has been a long time since the last time he made porridge for someone and he couldn't believe that it would be for Chloe this time. Well, he only made porridge for two people and Chloe's the second one.

"You should eat before taking your meds. C'mon, I made you delicious porridge." He announced as he entered the room while holding a tray of her food. He even peeled an apple and squeezed a fresh pineapple juice.

She slowly sat upright and leaned her back against the headboard. He placed the tray on the bedside table and took the bowl of porridge before sitting next to her.

"You didn't have to cook for me. I'll just sleep this off and surely be okay when I wake up."

"Why? Don't you like porridge?" He couldn't help but to feel disappointed.

"I didn't say that. I just—"

"—Then, eat up before it gets cold." He scooped a spoonful of porridge, blew on it to make sure that it wasn't too hot for her and was about to feed her when she turned her head away.

"I can feed myself. I only have a fever but I'm not invalid." She looked annoyed. Before she almost collapsed a while ago, they already fought over what happened in the past. She didn't tell him exactly why she changed her mind back then but he was determined to hear everything from her although, he already had an idea.

But after Jade left, her mood seemed to be worsened even though she wasn't saying anything. He could feel the tension boiling inside of her.

"I know that but I want to take care of you."

"Why? Because Doctor Chen said so?"

His forehead creased. "What?"

"I know that she asked you to take care of me but you don't have to. She's not here to see your efforts anyway."

Cross' jaw dropped. What did she just say? And why did she sound like a jealous girlfriend? He wanted to smile of the thought but he suppressed the urge to do so in order to not piss her even more.

"I'm doing this because I want to not because she told me so. Is there any problem, Chloe? Your mood has worsened since a while ago. Do you feel any pain? Tell me what's wrong so that I could ask Jade to come back here if necessary."

"I'm fine. My head is aching so please, leave me alone for now." He shook his head determinedly.

"No. I don't want to leave you alone. You're sick and I'm going to be with you until your fever is gone."

"Cross—"

"—No. I insist on staying by your side, Chloe, and that's final. C'mon, say 'ah'." She glared at him.

"What am I, a kid?"

"Well, if you don't want to appear like a kid then just let me feed you. Eat up so that you could take your medicine." Even though she still looked like she wanted to argue, it seemed like she didn't have the strength to do so. He almost smiled when she finally opened her mouth.
