CHAPTER 55

CROSS' PAST

THE SKY was dark as the rain started pouring. It was already past six in the evening. People were rushing to go home after a whole day at work to be with their family for the rest of the evening but Cross was different.

He remained sitting on the bench under the tree on the side of the road, uncaring if some drops of the rain were already drenching him.

His stomach was already growling in hunger but he just ignored it as he knew that he didn't have anything delicious to eat tonight.

Then, there was a sudden commotion.

"Someone stole my phone!" A woman cried and everyone's attention shifted to her before looking around, wondering who the perpetrator could be but no one seemed to have seen or noticed it.

This kind of scene was usual in that area and he didn't even get surprised anymore.

Then, he saw that familiar face blending into the crowed like a chameleon in camouflage with a smirk on his face, stealthily slipping something into his pocket.

"What the fù—" Cross stood up and that was when the guy noticed him and he slowly back off before eventually taking off without anyone else noticing him.

Instead of following him, Cross headed to another route. It was a narrow one which led to a poorest neighborhood in Brownsville. He knew where that guy was heading to and he was right because not even 3 minutes of running and he ran into him.

He gasped upon seeing him.

"Where do you think you're going?" Cross asked and the guy in front of him gulped nervously.

"I-I was just h-heading home."

Cross scoffed. "C'mon, Flynn. You're really going to try to deceive me like this?"

Flynn swallowed hard. "I'm telling you the truth. The rain is getting heavier and I'm sure, my mother is already looking for me. I need to go." He was about to walk past him but he blocked his way.

Flynn was 2 years younger than him. He was 15 while Cross was 17 years old. When he arrived in this place 2 years ago after finally leaving the orphanage, Flynn was the first one he met. He saved him from those punks who were beating him up for money.

"I'll ask you one more time. Are you trying to try to trick me by lying in my face?"

"Of course not, Cross. I—" Before he could even utter another lie, Cross gave him a blow in the pit of his stomach which obviously hurt him. He even coughed a couple of times and fell on his knees.

"Give it to me." He then demanded him coldly.

"C-C'mon, Cross. Can you let this slide for once? I need the money." Flynn pleaded, still in pain.

"I don't fùcking care if you need the money or not. Give it to me now before I lose my patience with you. You don't want that to happen, don't you?" He shook his head vigorously in response.

"Then, hand it over to me this instant." Still hesitant, Flynn handed him over the cellphone he stole from that woman.

"If you're going to sell it, can you at least give me 30% of the money?" He demanded and Cross shot him a sharp stare.
