The smell of buttered popcorn and sweat filled the air and while normally, Jack would've been disgusted, internally he was extremely nervous.
Denise sat beside him as they watched Selena, while Jack fiddled with his hands.
Though a sad part of the movie was playing, Denise began laughing which made Jack and other viewers stare at her in annoyance.
"Why you laughing Denise? These people will rip our fucking heads off if we make any more noises! Latina's don't play! Keep quiet!" Jack whispered.
Hearing Jack speak made Denise's laugher grow even more and soon enough, everyone was glaring at her again.
Jack smiled at all the women glaring at him and dragged Denise out of the theater.
"Sorry about her! She forgot to take her meds! The mental hospital told me to expose her to different cultures but it seems like she isn't fond of the Mexicans!" Jack said apologetically.
"What did you just say, perra?" Someone said from the audience.
Denise laughed even harder as Jack's eyes widened at the angry woman.
"I uhm. Sorry puto! See you next time!" Jack said before running off with Denise.
The pair ran all the way across the mall and Jack panted in exhaustion.
Denise laughed once more, and Jack had enough.
"What is so funny Denise? TELL ME!" Jack said in annoyance.
"Because of you! You're so nervous for some reason! And also, puto is a bad word! Goodness Jack! You know nothing about me! You said Latina's don't mess around, not knowing that I'm a Latina too! We gotta get better at this. I don't want Jack Smith. I want the real you." Denise said smiling.
Jack tensed at Denise's words.
She was right.
They truly didn't know anything about each other.
"Y-you're right. Let's start now. You ask a question then I'll ask! You start!" Jack said happily.
Denise shrugged for a moment then quickly perked up and spoke.
"Have you ever had a girlfriend?"
Jack's eyes widened in embarrassment as Denise spoke.
No, he never had a girlfriend.
But that was too embarrassing to admit!
Though Jack was about to answer, Denise giggled once more.
"So you never had one! Why not? I'm pretty sure you've liked someone before you met me, right?" Denise asked curiously.
While Jack hated the way Denise could read through him, he also liked the way she knew him so well.
"Well, I have had crushes but none of them ever wowed me. You know what I mean? The only way I'd ever want to start a relationship with someone is if they want commitment. I'm not into the random hookup culture and stuff. I just want to marry the first person I date. It's weird but, that's the way I've always felt." Jack said lowly.
Denise stopped walking as she heard Jack's confession.
Jack tensed, feeling like he said too much, until Denise grabbed his arm and smiled. She smiled at him for what seemed like hours before giving him a tight hug.
Though Jack was confused by the gesture, he held her even tighter as she spoke.
"I feel the same way. God, I've wasted the last three years of my life with Carter. When I found him crying in the room and asked what was wrong he admitted everything. He told me he met Rita on one of our dates and they fell in love ever since. It hurt me. But not as badly as I thought. I just- I just wish I chose you instead of him. I want to be married. I want to have kids. And also, I want you. Will you be my boyfriend Jack? If you want to, that is?" Denise said nervously.
