"Oh! I almost forgot, hindi yata nabanggit ni Tony ito, masyado kang na-sales talk sa government awards," Enrico said, taking a bite of my dessert kasi makikitikim daw siya.
"What is it?"
"Awardee si Jaena ng Business Circle."
"Yung Young Entrep ba?"
"Yes, and youngest millionaire. We're still deliberating until August, pero nasa list siya ng nominees. Hindi lang ako sigurado kung makaka-second year siya ngayon kasi hindi pa tapos sina Ali. Still, self-made millionaire naman ang bata, Tessa, baka puwede nating pagbigyan muna para sa anak mo."
Nahampas ko tuloy siya sa braso. "Bakit ngayon mo lang sinabi!"
"Because the deliberation is not yet done? Tessa, my love, we don't count the chickens before they hatch. But who knows, di ba?"
"Hi, Mr. Dardenne!"
Napaderetso ng upo ang asawa ko nang tawagin siya sa counter. But to our surprise, hindi pala si Enrico ang tinawag kundi ang kapapasok lang na lalaki sa café. Ang anak kong may buhat-buhat na kahon. He wore a corporate attire, so bakit siya may dalang kahon? Aanhin niya 'yan?
"Tingnan mo 'tong anak mo," sabi ko habang nakatingin kay Ronerico sa malayong counter na tanaw namin ng daddy niya.
"Where's Jaesie?" nakangiti niyang tanong kay Shiela.
"Sa office, sir. Tawagin ko po?"
"Please. Thank you!"
I was watching my son smile, fixing his hair in front of the dessert case's reflection, and standing straight after that girl, Jaena, went out. She only wore a simple long-sleeved blouse tucked into black slacks, ni hindi man lang nag-ayos para sa anak ko.
"Mr. Dardenne!" Jaena called, and she sounded . . . normal? "Galing kang office?"
"Yeah!" My son's enthusiasm wasn't changing that girl's reaction.
Hoy, masaya ang anak kong makita ka! Ano't namamaywang ka lang diyan, ha? Alam mo ba kung gaano karaming babae ang naghahabol diyan?
