Silence

Silence.

Y/n sat in silence.

She wasn't particularly sad at that moment. Just thoughtful.

Thoughtful in the sense that she didn't know if the roses were white on the other side of the rosebush. In the sense that she hadn't had the chance to figure out which door of the house led to the beautiful garden that she had spent so much of the past few weeks admiring.

She knew that she needed to change her position. Her back was hunched over to give her the ability to rest her head on her arms, which were laid down on the windowsill behind her bedpost. The stiff feeling in her neck felt like it would be permanent.

Y/n straightened up, removing her arms from their resting place in the process. She arched her back inwards in an attempt to relieve the rigid feeling in her spine. It was no help.

She sighed.

A mouse in a cage.

That's all that I am right now.

But she had made her peace with it.

She slouched again, leaning her head back and closing her eyes.

The room smelled of nothing. Even a deeper breath couldn't reveal even a slight scent.

*creeeak*

The sudden sound of the door opening grasped her attention, and Y/n was snatched out of her daze and turned around on her bed. After having closed her eyes for a while, her eyesight was tinted with a mild blue hue.

Hueningkai entered the room calmly, not registering her presence yet. In his hand, he was holding a small brown paper bag. He seemed to be zoned out, thinking about something else.

The strange sight amused Y/n, and she found herself stifling giggles. This caused him to notice the girl, and his face displayed mild surprise.

"I didn't notice you.."

He giggled slightly afterwards. This pricked up the corners of Y/n's lips.

He proceeded to close the door behind himself, which she wasn't expecting.

"I was going to leave this for you, but you already finished training for today, right?"

"Right."

He took a few steps forward and, still leaving a little space between himself and her bed, leaned forward to hand the bag over to Y/n. She took it curiously, immediately analysing the shape of the contents before opening it.

Rectangular. Thin.

Before giving herself a chance to wonder what it could be, Y/n lifted the flap and peered into the golden-brown container. Her hand pulled out a small, black, hardcover book.

A quick flick-through of the pages revealed that they were all lined, empty pieces of paper.

"Is this a diary?"

"A diary, notebook, logbook, recipe book, whatever you like."

Hearing the options made Y/n smile and gaze at the gift, already excited to use it.

"I'd just figured you were a little bored, so I decided to get you something to pass time. I didn't know if there was anything specific you might have liked, so I settled on the safest option."

The gesture melted Y/n's heart and made her blush profusely.

"Thank you, Hueningkai... This is so nice of you..."

"Oh, just Kai is fine,"

He smiled sheepishly as he said that, clearly trying his best to make Y/n comfortable.

"nobody calls me Hueningkai anymore."

A bird tweeted outside.

Y/n thought that Kai was going to leave the conversation at that and leave her alone.

"So what do you think you're going to do with it?"

"Huh?"

"The book."

He came closer to her and sat himself at the edge of her bed. Y/n was glad to have his company for a little longer. She looked down at the notebook and thought momentarily.

"Maybe sketching. I'm not sure yet."

"I didn't peg you as an artist."

Y/n smiled.

"I wouldn't say artist..."

She trailed off. Kai was staring into her eyes with a ghost of a smile on his face, waiting for her to say more.

"Kai. Can I ask you a question?"

"Sure."

Y/n bit her lower lip slightly, unsure of how to phrase her question.

"How did you guys... become... like this?"

"Like what?"

He tilted his head curiously.

"Involved in the mafia. You don't seem like the type to..."

Afraid of saying something offensive, Y/n left her sentence at that.

"...do crime?"

He finished it for her. Y/n nodded slowly.

"Well..."

Kai seemed to be thinking of what to say. Y/n began to regret asking that type of question.

"Y- You don't have to answer if it- you don't want to,"

She stumbled over her words in an attempt to undo her actions.

"I- I was just curious."

Kai sighed.

"No, it's okay. You deserve to know anyway."

Despite his calm tone, Y/n noticed how he leaned in closer, as if he was sharing sensitive information.

The bird outside found its nest and fell quiet, resting at last.
