All I hear is screaming, it bounces off the walls and howls out the windows.
I try to close my eyes and block out the sound until the next wave comes, I fall asleep until a knock at the door wakes me.
'Katniss, wake up someone wants to meet you'. I feel a weight on my chest and through my tired eyes I can see a dirty blood ridden rag squirming against my skin, rain falls on me through the hole in the roof above me, its been this way since December but neither me or my mum could climb up on the roof to fix it in the snow. I wouldn't have let mum climb up there In her state anyway, the ice makes it too slippery.
my 6th birthday consisted of sitting under waterproof plastic, trying not to catch the rain.
the baby in my arms starts to cry and I try to rock it, I copy what I've seen my mum do 100 times before when she has had to delivery babies for people who didn't know what to do, I don't know what to do, I don't like babies.
'Kat? what do you want to call her? its your choice..'
I take my first look at the baby in my arms, her blue eyes radiate against her yellow jaundice skin, even with bloody matted curls she still looks perfect.
'Primrose, poppa I want to call her Primrose, like the flowers we saw in the meadow last week'.
'well baby girl, make sure you look after Primrose for your mama, she needs as much help as you can while I'm away, I'm sure you can do it'.
