It's been two weeks and finally my doctor has decided to discharge me. A nurse comes in with a thick folder of my paper work and prescriptions, you know for the pain. She sits the folder down and I grab it, sifting through different credentials.
One of them is for my psychical therapy that I have to report to every other day. I throw it down at my feet and it lands with a thud but I can't feel it.
"Are you excited to be going home?" She asks in a cheery voice. I nod and sip on my cup of ice chips. It's so cold it freezes my tooth and takes everything I have not go scream out in pain.
"Your mother said she'd be here in just a few seconds to pick you up." She smiles at me and I can see the sympathy I her eyes. "I'll go get a bag for your stuff."
She leaves with a soft thud and I'm sitting by myself. Matty had to go home today, I forced him to because he wildly eat anything and I was starting to get scared that he'd get sick and have to end up here again. He was reluctant about leaving because everyday for the past two weeks I've had nightmares, last night was the worst yet and he wasn't here but that was okay because a nurse came into sit with me while I calmed down. I wish it was Matty but he needs to worry about his health before mine.
I feel like we are to connected and that the time apart was good but I love this too. I love him worrying about me and I love worrying about him. I love what we have.
"Joclin?" It my mom, I can tell by the quippy voice.
"Yes mom?" She's smiling, coming around the long curtain, a styrofoam box of something in her hand.
"You look great. Ready to go?"
"Yes." I nod.
"Well they want you to eat some real food before they let you go. So I brought your favorite. Lasagna!" She pops the top open on the box and shoves it across the table to me.
"I spent all day making it." She beams. I shove a piece in my mouth and right behind her my dad comes charging in with my bags in his hands.
"Oh, Dharla. Can she eat when we get home?"
"Jeff, she is eating now." She waves him off into a chair in the other side of the room.
Thy watch as I scarf down half a carton of lasagna and then my father impatiently caps the box and shoves it in bag.
"Ready, J?" I nod wiping my mouth, he pulls a wheelchair around and helps me get inside and they wheel me to the front door and into the car.
...
Mom drives the whole way with the windows down and the music blaring. Some old country singer, and my dad sings along, tapping his fingers.
They're taking me to Jackie's because I can't go home- if you can even consider that home. When my mom pulls up I notice a black SUV parked behind Jackie's jeep. I can see my moms smile spreading as we head up to the door.
"Welcome home!" Everyone screams as I step inside. Gemma and Sophia are standing right in the doorway. My heart melts seeing them both and then Matty comes from behind them holding a cake.
"Welcome home."
I wheel over to Gemma, hugging her tight and lift Sophia into my lap. Matty sits the cake on the table and kisses me.
"We're getting out of here."
