Marlene Broditch was never really normal per se, well of course she had telekinesis and was a student at the infamous school for outcasts 'Nevermore Academy'. But she was also a raging lesbian.
Now you may think that Marlene was sent to Nevermore for the fact that she has telekinetic powers, not no, she was able to control her powers since she was a small child. A natural one may say. She was sent to Nevermore by her parents after she came out to them at the ripe age of 14.
David and Nicole Broditch were never blatantly homophobic, but they did leave subtle hints, not huge ones but small idiosyncrasies. Like whenever they saw a queer couple holding hands they would grimace, not much but just enough for Marlene to see. She thought that if she came out they might change their perspective about gay people, but alas she was wrong.
They didn't say anything, just sat on their chairs and shook their heads with disappointment. The next morning she came downstairs to find her bags packed and a car waiting for her. Her parents still didn't say anything. Not even as she begged them to let her stay. Not even as she told them it could be a phase. Not even when she left with tears freely falling down her face and never saw them again for the foreseeable future.
~~~~~
When she got to Nevermore she became a new person entirely. She changed everything about herself, including her name. She no longer went by Marlene but rather Marley or occasionally Mars from either her roommate Enid Sinclair or self-proclaimed 'bestie' Xavier Thorpe.
Marley wasn't the innocent, kind girl she used to be (but let's be honest who's innocent at 14 anymore?). Of course she's still nice to people, but only those who she trusts which is mainly her inner circle of friends. But with new people she put up a wall, one made entirely of sarcasm and crude/dark humour. She's kind of like a geode in that sort of way. Dark and curious on the outside wondering if on the inside is the treasure you seek or if it's more of the hard exterior. Basically she's a softie when it comes to the people she cares about. A true Terry Jeffords if you will.
So when a girl who literally looks like she came out of a 1950's TV show happens to be her and Enid's new roommate, she doesn't know what to think. Whether it's the fact that she matches her type of humour or the fact that Marley gets gay panic whenever they get into close proximity of each other.
But what she does know is that Wednesday Addams is going to cause all sorts of trouble and bring some life back into the blandness of Nevermore Academy. And Marley can't wait to join her.
