Chapter 14: “You want me to play charades with him?!”
The phone in the classroom rang and the teacher went to answer it. You see in our school they found it would be a lot more convenient and private if the staff communicated through phones. A bunch of nods and whispers of comprehension were heard from our teacher.
“Marissa you need to meet with the committee for an activity.” I could see by the scowl on Ms. Lassento’s face that she found it irritating that I could just leave in the middle of class for some ‘mingling’ as people her age would call it. Ethan gave me a confused look. Since he was technically on the committee he should’ve been going too but since he was a guy and he looked—well like he did, everyone knew that he wouldn’t have a problem getting a date. To bad he wasn’t going. Even when I begged him, all he told me was, and I quote:
“What’s the point of going to a school dance where they play lame mainstream pop, that’s overplayed on the radio, where everyone’s dressed like sissy’s and getting all sweaty in a crowded gym despite the time they all took to get ready and look nice for it in the first place.” For a guy who came up with half the ideas in the dance committee he sure didn’t sound enthusiastic about it.
“Speed dating” I mouthed to him. His face went dark. I knew he was just jealous that I got to get out of class when he had to stay and learn about plants (how weeds can grow anywhere without planting, I mean who cares?)
I headed over to the cafeteria and was amazed. Melissa had really out done herself she actually made a nice poster and cute tables with naps with our names on them. The whole room epitomized cuteness. There were cute little flowers made out of hearts everywhere. I went and sat down at my table. Kelly soon came over.
“You know, I’ve always wished that I could skip this part.” She said and I just laughed. Every year Kelly would have the worst luck. Last year she met a guy he was great until she found he was some psycho that snuck into the school (he wasn’t even a teenager). And the year before that she found the perfect date but he ended up sneezing in her face and she was sick for the rest of the week.
I patted her arm in reassurance. “It’s okay everything will go horribly wrong this year.” I said with a wink. I didn’t want to jinx her so I wished her the complete opposite of what I hoped for her.
Then Tracie came along (she snuck in like the bad puppy she is…)
“Hey what’re you doing here? You don’t need a date you have Ethan…”
I gave her a look. “What?!” She asked in protest. I shook my head at her.
“First of all Ethan’s not ‘mine’ and second of all he isn’t even going to the dance.”
“What?” Kelly, Tracie and surprisingly Melissa all said in unison. Melissa walked closer to our table.
“Why isn’t he coming?!” She asked in disbelief.
“Because he doesn’t like school dances.”
“Then why did he join the committee in the first place?”
“Because of Marissa, he wanted to spend time with her.” I shot Kelly a glare for not saying the exact truth.
Melissa just shot us a dirty glare and walked off. If looks could kill I would’ve been singing with the angels by now. Her heels clicked hard on the floor as she walked away. Man was she in a mood. Maybe it was her time of the month.

I had gone through so many guys and none of them were the least bit appealing. Well I shouldn’t say that. I did meet one but then when I found out that he was only here because he found this as an event to skip class and that he wasn’t even planning on going to the dance, well let’s just say it was a total turn off.
