After greeting a few of the guests, I excused myself and walked off to change for the private reception. I walk into the room that we rented, and I notice the dress already spread out for me on the bed. I run up to it and start taking my dress off, but I run into some difficulties.
I hear the door open and close, and dread fills my body. I turn around swiftly and come face to face with Kiandre. She gives me a small smile and walks up to me.
"Congrats, bestie. Let me help you" I give her a small smile in return, and she helps me undo the laced-up back of the dress. She starts singing a beautiful melody and I close my eyes, capturing these serene moments.
"You know, this is the song I wrote for you. It's stuck in my head." I smile at her thoughtfulness.
"Sing it louder."
"It's hard to know what she would say, but I think she'd want to you love like the world's on fire, want you to love like hearts don't break, never look down when you walk the wire, like she made it to 48, still made your birthday cake. I'm done, put the dress on".
My eyes stay wide as I think about what she was referring to. She was referring to my mother. She would always make my birthday cake, and she died at 47. My hand reaches for the dress, slightly shaking. I quickly slip on the dress I saw in that London boutique.
"Is the song about my mother?"
"Yes, it is. You like it?"
"I love it. Something else to remember her with. Now, let's get this over with" I grab Kiandre's hand, ready to walk out, but she stops me.
"Wait, Sine and I packed you aback, for if you leave tonight"
"Thank you. Really."
"Stop thanking me, and let's go eat cake!" I laugh with her as she drags me back to the party.
When we get to the hall where the reception is taking place, I notice Sine glaring in a specific direction. I follow her line of sight, and my eyes land on Leandro, conversing with Vincent. She sees me and smiles while walking up to me, her features softened.
