sick: kageyama - caretaker: hinata
3rd pov:
since tobio was young, he was pushed for greatness. ergo, his mindset of wanting to be the best. the best at everything. the best at running. the best at memorizing. but most importantly, the best at volleyball. the very best setter. he wanted to be number one. so, even if he got a little cold, he still showed up at practice. plus, he didn't want to lose to hinata. hinata and him had a competition with absences too, no way he was losing to the little squirt. he was gonna go and he was gonna win.
he dragged himself up in the morning and got changed into his uniform before he dreadfully headed to school. he got there and honestly got through the day with relative ease. but, unfortunately as soon as practice started, that ease disappeared. of course today was the day daichi decided to have them run up the karasuno hill. after all, the team did in fact need to improve their stamina so this was a solid way. like before, they lined up in pairs, kageyama pairing up with hinata. "ready," daichi asked, getting simultaneous nods from the two first years. "go!" he clapped his hands, signaling for the two to take off. they were the second to last group to go and they immediately took off running, trying to outrun the other one.
they got up about halfway to the checkpoint before tobio felt his chest starting to tighten. shit, the sickness was coming to bite him in the ass. he felt his chest tightening, was it always this hard to breath going up hill? shit. he needed to rest but hinata was still going. kageyama started to cough as he ran before he came to a complete stop. he leaned over, placing his hands on his knees and trying to breath. "fuck-" he cursed through a cough, catching the attention of the shorted male. "oh? can't keep up, stupid-yama!" he taunted, it was embarrassing the names he tried to come up with. "shut it!" kageyama tried to retort but it was severely muffled by his coughing.
hinata finally took the situation more seriously and came over to him. "sit down then." he said, grabbing the setter by the arm and pulling him towards a rock. he made kageyama sit on the trail, waiting for suga and daichi to come running up. they would know what to do. while they waited for the two older boys to come, hinata helped kageyama control his breathing. he grabbed kageyamas hand and brought it over, placing it on his chest. he slowly took deep breaths so that tobio could follow them.
when the the two third years arrived, they looked down at hinata and kageyama, startled from their presence. "kageyama is dying!" hinata exclaimed as he stared up at them, obviously over exaggerating it. daichi and suga crouched down to the other boys level, taking into account the ragged breathing. suga brought his hand up and touched kageyama head, feeling him burning up. "he has a fever, daichi." he informed the captain and that finalized the decision in daichis head. "you will have to go home and rest, kageyama." he said firmly with a curt nod. "no!" the young setter argued. "yes! i'm the captain and i said so. you couldn't make it up the hill even. go home." daichi repeated, standing up. "suga, go run up to the others, you'll be in charge of practice while i get him back." he said, grabbing kageyamas hand and pulling him to his feet. "i'll come too! he's sick and obviously can't care for himself!" he said quickly, practically jumping up. he just wanted an excuse to hang out with the setter but no one needed to know that.
daichi sent them both home after that interaction, walking them to the club room to make sure they actually left. once he knew that both the first years were headed home, he went back to practice with the team.
"you know you didn't have to come, hinata." kageyama commented, too sick to come up with a name. he was tired. he wanted to sleep. no, he needed to sleep. "yeah, well, you're stupid."hinata shrugged, the comment making kageyamas head whip around. "you're stupid and you wouldn't rest if i didn't come. you would try and practice volleyball. i get it. you love it. but like daichi said, everyone has their limit and needs rest. even the king." hinata further explained as they walked together, hinata walking his bike beside them. he actually seemed..mature for a moment. he seemed to take on the role well.
when the pair got to the house, tobio unlocked the door and let them in, both taking off their shoes and putting their bags down. "can i lay down?" kageyama asked, glancing back at the shorter male. "you don't need to ask. just go do it. i'll be there in a second. where is your bathroom and medicine?" he asked, tilting his head slightly. "really? you need to go to a bathroom at a time like this?!" kageyama insulted, momentarily getting back to normal. "no! i'm going to get you medicine, jerkface!" he rebuttaled as he walked off. "take a left!" tobio called out and hinata did, finding the bathroom and medicine cabinet.
kageyama walked off and got into bed, not bothering to change. he was too tired. he needed sleep. as he was about to doze off, he was interrupted by hinata coming in. hinata had a younger sister so of course he knew how to deal with sick people. he went over to the younger male and sat at the edge of the bed. he held the thermometer out, letting him lift his tongue before he put it in. he took the setters temp before he placed a damp rag on his forehead. for the first time ever, hinata didn't say anything. he was concentrating. he was trying to remember everything he did when his sister was sick. he grabbed some medicine and a water he had got, opening the bottle and handing it to kageyama. tobio saw a completely different side of him. he was being gentle. he was being slow. he was being..caring. kageyama was a clingy sick person so when he was finally all settled, he opened his arms slowly. "come here.." he whispered, asking for a hug. he would blame it on the fever if hinata said anything about it being weird.
hinata just nodded and got into bed with him, laying next to him and pulling kageyamas head closer to his chest. "you know, you are really good at volleyball. but you can't play if you are sick. that's dangerous." hinata whispered, mindlessly playing with the setters hair while he stared at the ceiling. there was a few minutes of silence as kageyama fought off the sleep. "you would've done the same, boke.." he muttered before he finally gave in and let himself fall asleep in hinatas embrace.
