I Don't Want a Mate

I had no idea how drastically my life was going to change tonight as I sat at my vanity staring at myself in the mirror, trying to will myself to just get up and go downstairs already, to go and join in on the damn mate party that was currently underway.

Urg! I hate this whole concept. It was understandable for wolves that wanted to find their destined mate, but I could careless either way.

I'm very much like my father when it came to this subject, very stand offish about the idea that there was one perfect match for me out in the world.

My mother on the other hand was a true romantic or so I've been told, I really don't remember much about her. Gazing at my reflection, hoping to feel some kind of connection to her, only to fail miserably at it.

She had been killed nineteen years ago protecting my brother from a rogue wolf passing through our territory, I was just a little pup of two at the time.

Everyone always tells me how I look just like her, how I have the same chocolate brown, wavy hair with highlights of bronze, same body type, yet I have curves and more muscle tone then her had, at least from what I can tell from pictures of her anyway.

I even stood a few inches taller at 5'6", where as she was a mere 5'2", same round face and oval eyes, yet mine were hazel brown with flecks of gold around the iris like my fathers, where as hers were a beautiful bright green. Yes, almost a living replica of her.

Which I'm sure is extremely hard on my father. Yet he never shows it, I'm very much a daddy's girl.

"Elena." gazing up into my mirror, making eye contact with the man who's gruff, masculine voice pulled my attention.

Spotting my older brother, Asher, standing in my doorway watching me skeptically. He knows how much I do not want to go downstairs, how much I detest having to surrender my choice of mate to our Moon Goddess.

Elena, we need our mate my wolf Athen huffed at me, rolling my eyes at I tried to ignore her insistance about the subject.

"Yes Asher." sighing, before reluctantly turning in my vanity chair to face him compeletly.

Watching him slowly cross my room, I could't help but smile at the handsome man my brother had become. He looks so much like our father, 6'2" broad shoulder, muscular, confident, ashy blonde hair, strong square jaw just like dad's. Yet his eyes are the same bright green as our mother and held a softer glint of authority then dads and with much more mischief in them.

"You know your going to have to at least make an appearance at this party." smirking at me as he came to a stop, standing just in front of me. Shaking my head, I let out an agitated sigh.

Oh how I hate this.

Please at least give it a chance. Groaning, I shake my head at Athen as she once again pleads with me to give the option of our destined mate a chance.

Every year our pack, along with the packs we are in a alliance with join together so that the single wolves of those pack can come together and hopefully find their True Mate. Their other half promised to them from our beloved Moon Goddess. Once a werewolf turns eighteen the Goddess allows them to be found by their Mate.

"This is ridiculous Ash... Why do I need to do this? I can have an arranged marriage like mom and dad and be just as happy as they were." exclaiming in frustration.

I really don't hold much stock in Mates, something I agreed with my father on. Especially since our Goddess gives us a chance to reject them if we don't find them to be acceptable, if their a perfect match why was there the choice of rejecting them. Urg, complicated.
