Moving on (Mario & Pauline)

(Pauline gets the best birthday gift this b-day, Meeting up with a old friend for the first time in a while. But now that hes here there's some things she would like to discuss. During SMO...obviously)

"You figured out exactly what I wanted! I've been without a purse since I lost it that terrible day..." It was funny to think how moments ago the city was in pure and utter chaos. After Bowser brought the mecha wiggler Pauline was afraid that she would have to evacuate everyone from the city, even though she didn't know where the people and her would go. Luckily, an old friend, Mario came to once again save not only her but all of new donk city.

And now here he was with a last minute birthday present for her. There had to be something she could give in return.

"Here" She brought out a power moon "I know you need more power moons so I hope this helps"

Mario looked at Pauline in shock. "Ah I appreciate your concern but it is your birthday. You don't need to give me gift"

"Oh no worries Mario. We owe you so much more after all you've done for us"

Mario nodded and put the moon away. "How did you know I needed a purse?" Pauline asked.

"He got a little help" Cappy spoke and opened his eyes, revealing that he was a living being and not an inanimate object.

Pauline became tense and backed up a step. "Mario, your hat can talk!?"

"Yeah I get that reaction a lot" Cappy got off Mario's head and transformed into his original form "Didn't mean to scare you. My name is Cappy. It's nice to meet you" Cappy reached out his little hands for a handshake.

Pauline shook his hand. She was still a little weirded out but he seemed nice enough so she didn't make a scene "It's nice to meet you too Mr. Cappy. My name is Pauline"

"I know, Mario has told me a lot about you while we were here" Cappy said landing on top of Mario's head again. Mario rubbed the back of his head in embarrassment.

Pauline smiled, honored to hear that Mario still thought of her as a good friend. "Well why don't you come in my office. Surely you need a break after defeating the mecha wiggler"

"Well we are sort of on a mission" Mario responded "but it would be nice to relax for a bit. What do you say Cappy?"

"I...I guess we can stay"

"Splendid! Come with me"

"Welcome to my office boys" She said as she opened the big double doors to the mayors office. The office was huge and very decorative. There was the new donk city flag next to her desk, many posters and trophies she had gotten hanged on the walls or on shelves, and a few of her old albums she made back in the days with an old music box.

"Pretty cool, huh" She said as she sat at her desk. She shifted the fruit basket on her desk. "Want some?"

Mario gladly took an apple from the basket while Cappy shock his head. "Right! You're a hat" Pauline nodded as she shifted the basket away from them. "So, what brings you here? I haven't seen you since, well, you know..."

Mario took a few more chomps from his apple and swallowed before talking. "Its-a-long story but were basically trying to save that Princess that is being kidnapped by that turtle looking monster that attacked the city" Mario took a bite from his apple but kept on talking. "And the tiara on her head"

"T-The tiara?"

"My sister" Cappy explained.

"Right..." This was never going to not be weird "Well it's good to know that your still as selfless and heroic as I remember you as" Pauline smiled sadly "but, uh, I actually brought you here so we can talk.

Cappy and Mario turned their attention to Pauline.

"Oh, um, preferably alone" Pauline reiterated, she turned towards Cappy "Sorry sir"

"No problem" Cappy said as he got off of Mario's head "Call me when you guys are done, Mario" Mario and Cappy waved to each other before the top hat went out the door.

Pauline took a deep breath before she continued "Mario I know I've said it a million times already but I really do appreciate you helping me in my time of need. I really do not deserve your kindness"

"What makes you say that Pauline" Mario asked

"Heh maybe the fact that I was a terrible girlfriend I mean I basically ditched you after my album came out" Pauline shock her head, angry at her younger self "And it wasn't just you, I pushed away everyone who actually cared for me before I made it big. I don't even know what I was thinking, maybe I thought I was better then everyone just because I was famous" Pauline chuckled dryly "Obviously I wasn't"

Pauline looked at Mario, whose face was full of concern. "I'm sorry Mario it's just... ugh" She dropped her head on the table "Ever since I became mayor and was forced to end my music career I've realized just how much my friends, family, and community are important to me. I apologized to everyone, some excepted it and some did not, but I've been living my life with a small ping of guilt because I never got to apologize to you before you left"

Pauline lifted her head off the table to properly talk to Mario. She wiped a few tears that were forming in her eyes. "I'm sorry, Mario. For abandoning you and making you feel like your worthless. You are everything to me and I'm sorry I'm only realizing this now"

After she had finished apologizing to Mario she waited silently for his response. Mario was also tearing up but also smiling. "Ahi! Pauline, I knew you changed ever since I saw the worried look on your face when the city was in disaster. While I was out interacting with the people I could see immediately just how much more joyful it is compared too when I lived here. I know it was because of you. I am so happy that your compassionate heart has finally resurfaced. I also apologize, I was a pretty clingy Boyfriend and was very insecure at times. I think me leaving benefited both of us"

Pauline sniffled and started to cry "hug?"

Mario came around the table to Pauline and they embraced each other in a big overdue hug and they just stayed like that for some time. "So does this mean were officially friends again?"

"Certo. Of course" Mario hummed.

Mario and Pauline broke apart and smiled at each other. Pauline shook her head "Oh Mario, you really are a sweetheart. I must do something for you right now! But what...?" Pauline thought for a while. "Oh a party! A huge one! Just to celebrate you, Mario! What do you think"

Mario rubbed the back of his head again "Lo ringrazio but I really need to find more moons to power the Odyssey so I can save my princess"

Pauline sadly smiled understandingly "I see, that girl is very special to you isn't she"

Mario nodded

Pauline thought for a second "You know my old band mates right. Tell them to help me set up for the party. If you do they might give you a power moon for your troubles. That way you can still gain power moons and set up for the party. How about that?"

Mario nodded again, he liked her idea.

"Then lets get going" Pauline giggled. Mario smiled as he got up from his seat, excited to fulfill his new mission. He ran out the door calling Cappy's name.

Pauline smiled to herself, he still that child like personality of his, even after all these years. Pauline turned her chair and looked out the big window. "I hope whoever that blond haired girl was treats that man right" she thought.

Pauline turned back to her table and got a piece of paper. She had one more big song to write.
