Not-so-happy birthday (Bowser x Luigi)

(It's Bowser's birthday and Luigi wants to make his birthday gift an unexpected surprise. But when things go south, Bowser realizes just how much Luigi means to him)

(This story is pretty angsty at the start. then is becomes a lil spicy at the middle and very fluffy towards the end :3)

Luigi grunted as he climbed up the gates to the dark lands holding a green present with blue ribbon in his mouth. Today was the old koopas birthday and Luigi wanted his visit to be a surprise, hence why he was sneaking into the kingdom at the beginning of the night. He hoped that Bowser liked his gift, he wanted to see his boyfriend's eyes to light up when he saw what he hot for him.

Boyfriend. It was kinda surreal for Luigi to refer to Bowser as his boyfriend but at the same time it filled him with a happy warm feeling in his stomach. He wondered how his past self would've reacted if he found out that the koopa king and him were in a relationship.

Luigi looked around when he reached the top of the gate. The coast was clear, and with that he jumped off the gate, expecting to hit the ground with no problems. What he didn't expect was to be stabbed mid air with three arrows. Two on his shoulders and one on his chest.

Luigi yelled loudly as he hit the ground and struggled to look at himself. Right, he forgot that Bowser's kingdom had tons of booby traps. It was probably his fault for not being more cautious in the first place.

But now he would lay there, bleeding to death, and his cold dead body would probably not be found until morning.

Bowser sat on his throne as he listened to Kamek's choir sing their last few notes. Kamek clapped in approval once it was done and turned to Bowser to see his reaction. Bowser gave a small smile to Kamek and nodded his head. "That was amazing Kamek. I'm sure it took you ages to prepare this song for my birthday".

Kamek smiled shyly "Oh sire it was nothing really". Kamek then proceeded to tell Bowser the story about how he conceived the song. Bowser face lit up with joy. Seeing his father happy had a weird way of making himself feel happy.

His joy was short lived when he heard a loud familiar yelp from the kingdoms gates. It seemed that he hadn't imagined it either as Kamek stopped talking and the choir murmured in panicked whispers. Bowser jumped out of his throne and burst through the palace doors.

Bowser prayed that what he thought happened didn't happen, that the yelp that he heard was just him hearing things and it was just a coincidence that everyone else also had a reaction to the noise. But when he got to the kingdoms gates his suspicions were unfortunately correct. Bowser rushed to Luigi's side and supported his head with his hands.

"Luigi! Answer me! Please say something!"

Luigi coughed up blood and looked up at Bowser. He forced a shaky smile. "H-Hap...Happy bir-birthday" Luigi said holding up his present. He winced in pain soon after and instead decided to lay the present on his stomach.

"Kamek! Teleport us to my bedroom now!" Bowser said with authority and urgency.

Kamek didn't waste another second. The trio was surrounded by a cloud of pink dust. One moment they were outside in the dark, cold ruins of the darklands and the next they were in the warm spacious bedroom of the koopa king.

Bowser layed Luigi on his bed and made sure that he was still breathing. "Get the kingdoms doctor. Tell him the king needs him asap." Kamek nodded and ran out the bedroom, leaving the two of them alone. Bowser took Luigi's present out of his arms and onto the drawer so that it wouldn't be tampered with. He then got one of the covers from his bed and put pressure on the wounds. It wasn't ideal but it did help minimize the bleeding.
